It looks like you replied to your own posting. Does this mean that the driver you refer to is something you found and that it does, in fact, solve your problem. I have the same problem I think the tapping of the touch pad is the most annoying, infuriating,and just downright DUMB "feature" I've ever seen on any computer, and like you said, I can't get the "disable tapping" to stick. Every time I turn it on again the ( I can'tg say a nasty word? thats annoying too) tapping is back!

This driver gives the option to disable tapping.
Tp2ua14i ....... it seems to be the newest one.

Yes that driver has a tab that you can disable tapping.
I feel as you that is a pain.
Go here and scroll down the page and download the driver (Tp2ua14i.)

If that link does not work hunt it up on the dell site it is the newest driver I think last month.
Save it somewhere on the hard drive and then double click it and it will install itself.
Do you know how to access the driver properties maybe your driver also has that feature as I had it before SP2.
