fax not working, Conexant driver won't re-install error code 40

We have had intermittent problems with our pre-loaded fax software since we got the computer.  Dell Dimension 2400.

Now it is not working at all.  We ran the modem helper and it said to reinstall the driver.  The Conexant driver on the Dell driver page won't load properly. We keep getting an "error code 40."  I can't seem to find anywhere on Dell to tell them to put a correct driver on the site ....  aarrgghh !!!

Anyone have a solution on how to get a correct installing driver for this?

by the way, what relation is NetWaiting from Conexant to the fax?  I see it listed with the fax driver and modem helper downloads.
