FTP problem

I can't access any ftp sites with my new 8600 w/WinXP Pro w/sp2. I can access them fine using my older Inspiron 8000 running WinME. I tried disabling the Windows firewall and the McAfee firewall. Everything else is OK. Trying with IE, the program just stops responding (using the ftp:// first).

I've also tried using SmartFTP and the server is found but either refused to connect or allow a login. Any ideas appreciated.

Jim,

I never knew about that other forum but I'll post the question there just to see what response, if any, I get. I still like Belkin products but they should do a better job differentiating products to prevent that kind of confusion. It should have been a simple thing to do.

If I get anything interesting as a response, I'll post it back here.

Also, there is evidently no way to resolve the bredonda.com address as it was just something that the guy who installed the network here made up, with an IP of 192.168.1.2. There's a PC in the marina office that runs a process, 'bredonda' that controls network access, etc. Its only visible from inside the local net.

Thanks, Larry! I'll admit that I was becoming curious! :)

Jim,
The guy who set it up knew that it wouldn't be routable but you're right, it does pose a risk. Actually, when boats come in that have a wireless router onboard, it does create some havoc.

Bredonda is short for Bahia Redonda, the name of the marina here. They do have a web site if you're curious, www.bahiaredonda.com.

Larry,

Well, at least the installer picked an IP address that's not routeable on the Internet! People shouldn't do things like that, though - it could have caused problems if you'd installed a router that dynamically assigns IP addresses in that range.

I've been trying to translate "bredona" with no success. Do you happen to know what the word means?

Jim
