Intel Pro 100 adapter dead?

Question

System: Dimension 8250, P2.66, 512Ram, cable modem via ethernet to onboard Intel Pro 100M network adapter. Problem: Lightning seems to have fried the adapter. Everything else is working OK. There is no adapter showing in the system info now. Questions: should I buy a PCI network card and if so, do I go with the Intel Pro 100M, or a Gigabit type, i.e. Intel Pro 1000 MT or GT ($35.00 +/-)? Or do I try to get the onboard adapter repaired? Or simply use a USB port and save my money? Will I sacrifice any speed or performance with USB vs. ethernet? Will a gigabit card be incompatible with this older machine? if your isp modem has a usb port then just use that , might need driver for it.
