Question

Ok...heres one for all us computer geeks...lol

Ipconfig will not release ip address for new connection. What do I do? Ipconfig will not renew either. Im stumped. I am stuck with a bad 169.xxx.xx address, and I cant reset to 000.000.00 I have reformatted the drive when problem arrose. I have sence reformatted twice..with no luck in changing the address....Each time i finish reformatting and get everything to norm..i check..and still the same address.

Be sure your drivers are up to date and reinstall them.

What kind of internet connection do you have (cable/dsl/dialup)? Which model computer do you have? After reinstalling Windows did you install the chipset drivers before attempting to install any other devices? Have you messed with the default settings in the TCP/IP properties?

More than likely the Chipset drivers were not installed, so if you would check the System Applet in the Control Panel and go to the Hardware Tab then to the Device manager to see what other devices did not get installed either.

I did run an experiment. I installed another ethernet card. And was able to get the internet working just fine. But I cant leave it in there, it belongs to another computer. So I took it back out and went back with the intergraded ethernet, and same problem.   And no..I rechecked the TCP/IP to make sure everything was default. I have reinstalled everything correctly. This is not my first reformat. There is nothing in the device manager with errors or question marks. I am hooked through DSL modem with ethernet. Demension 2400. So the ethernet is entergraded. Driver is fine and I did uninstall and reinstall the driver for ethernet. I didnt know chipset had anything to do with ethernet driver or ip address. I have reformatted hundreds of computers and I have never ran accross this problem..Thanks for the help.

I agree..But something tells me its a software issue and not a hardware issue, I was just asking incase there was something i didnt think of. Ill end up just buying a new Ethernet card. But , there should be a fix somewhere, I love problems I cant handle. I might even leave it broken until I pin point exactly what the problem is. Looks like this problem will be my hobby for a while.   Jake

Sounds like a dead NIC card so a PCI card is your only option.

New developement. With a PCI ethernet installed I can release the ip address. But when  renew it, it goes back to the same address and no internet connection is made. I unplug the modem, turn the pc off, plug in the modem and restart the pc. Still no connection. When I renew address, 2 computers show up in my start box in the bottom right hand corner...they soon dissapeer, but still no connection and when I check the address, it is identicle to the one before. I did a release and a flushdns, still nothing. Another computer hooked to the same modem , connects right away when I rest the modem. Here is the wierd part. The DSL Century man came over, plugged his computer to my friend's DSL modem, his computer worked fine. I took my friends computer home and plugged it into my Cable modem, after one reset, the computer worked fine. I plugged the PC it back into the DSL modem after resets, PC still doesnt work. This is wierd. And thats using the same PCI ethernet connection. So to sum it up..The DSL man veryfied that the DSL modem worked, and I veryfied that the PCI card worked. Just cant get them to work together.     Jake

Yep..I updated everything yesturday while hooked to my cable modem. Chipset and Bios.   When connected to the DSL modem I can release the address, but the same address apears, everytime I renew .192.xxx.xxx.xx     Jake Message Edited by jakelm on 08-24-200610:01 AM

That is a private address and if you are the only one behind that router, you will get that address everytime.  That is normal.

Give it a static address within that range and see what happens.
