limited or no connectivity internet problem please help!!!

Question

I have an inspiron I6400 with an intel(R) CPU T2400, 1.00GB of ram, windows xP service pack 2 I have a cable modem and have been able to connect to the internet wirelessly before. All the other computers are able to connect to the internet with no problem. When i connect through the intel proset wireless to manage my wifi, it says im connected and the signal strength is excellent...only, i am unable to actually access the internet even though it says my signal strength is excellent. when i try using the wireless zero configuration to manage my wifi, it also connects but says there is limited or no connectivity. I am currently using another computer in hopes of solving this problem. can anyone help???? I need my computer for finals!!!

You may need to power cycle the modem and router. Try this: Pull the power on the modem and router. Wait 4 minutes or so. Power the modem. After it powers fully then power the router. When it powers fully then try to connect wireless. If the ip address cannot be found then hit start and select run then type in cmd and hit enter. Type in ipconfig /release and hit enter. Then type in ipconfig /renew and then enter. The ip address should renew. If if does try wireless again. If this doesn't work Then try letting windows configure your connection instead of the Intel Proset. Also make sure your firewall is allowing internet access.

I have had this happen to me occasionally (4 or 5 times in 9 months). No, it's not VISTA as my two other VISTA computers never have this problem. It shows signal strength excellent and I am connected but only locally, not to the internet.

All I have ever done is disconnect and then reconnect which sometimes works. I have rebooted the computer which sometimes works, or go to network connection, status and then repair connection and bingo it's fine.

I am not saying these will work for you, but that's what I have done to get mine going.

Also, i dont think it's the internet as my roommate is able to connect wirelessly using her windows wifi

Ok, for some reason my intel proset is now working and i can access the internet through that.  But I still cannot access internet through the windows wifi manager and it is still giving me the message of limited or no connectivity when i switch over to it.  I want to be able to use the windows rather than the intel proset to manage my wireless internet.  When i try to repair the connection, it says i cannot renew my ip address.  I tried doing what you told me by goign to run, cmd, ipconfig/release, and then ipconfig/renew, but it doesnt work...it gives me the message:   Windows IP Configuration   An error occurred while renewing interface Wireless Network Connection : unable to contact your DHCP server.  Request has timed out.

Have you made sure to allow windows to configure your connection? Under the properties of this network do you have obtain ip address automatically and DHCP enabled?   If you cannot release and renew the ip address with the method above then usually re-power cycling the router and modem will help, or sometimes the modem has gone bad, or there is a setting wrong with the router or wireless card configuration. You say you can connect now using the proset? If so why not just use it? Usually best if you can. Can you connect to the modem directly using a network cable? If so try to see what you get when running cmd and then type ipconfig /all and post that.

how do i repower cycle the modem?  do u mean like disconnecting the modem and link and turning it back on?...because i tried that already....   Intel proset works, but it disturbs me that my internet doesnt work on the windows, when my roommate can access the internet through the windows manager   I'll try doing the last bit of directions and ill get back to you if that works   how do i see if i enabled it to obtain ip address automatically and if i have dhcp enabled?

You power cycle the modem and router as described in my first reply.

Go to network connections and for your wireless connection listed right click on it and select properties. The highlight internet Protocol/ TCP/IP and select properties. There you should have the obtain IP Address automatically and obtain DNS Server address automatically. Then select advanced and see if the DHCP is enabled. Your roommate may have a different setup and windows works better for him. But you should be able to right click the proset and have an option to allow windows to configure your wireless connection. Just right click the proset connection by the clock and select disconnect. The select connect and allow windows to configure the connection and configure it. I believe you can do it that way. May need to do this from network connections if not.

Yea, i know how to switch it over from intelproset to windows, but windows simply does not work.. I will try doing what you just said and seeing if that works. Thanks alot!

I have 2 laptops that I use with the same router. One connects better and stays connected with the Intel Proset and the other one without that wireless card does better with windows. I also prefer windows because I seem to have more options. But cannot stay connected on the one with the proset. There are other here like Volcano11 that probably could guide you better with their knowledge.

By the way, make sure you are allowing windows to configure your wireless network settings. Check and make sure. Open and view all network connections. Right click the wireless connection. Select change settings of this connection. Selecy wireless Networks. At the top make sure the box is checked to allow windows to configure my network settings. Then if checked run cmd, and type in ipconfig /release and hit enter. Then ipconfig /renew and hit enter. Now you have to get a renewal or if not you have other problems. If it will renew then try connecting with wndows configuration.

Microsoft have a patch for the 'Limited Connectivity' problem with wifi+Vista. It involves new version of two DLLs wlanmm.dll and wlanconn.dll.   To get it you have to submit a request and then they will e-mail the patch to you. You can then unzip and install the patch.   Here is a link to the Microsoft support page with the details....   http://support.microsoft.com/kb/930517   I didn't have to open a support call, and nobody has asked for any money.   For me the patch seems to have improved things - as long as I run WPA-Personal/TKIP encryption then the 'Limited Connectivity' problem seems to go away. If I try to run WPA2-Personal/AES encyption then the problem is still there, but I can live with WPA-Personal/TKIP for the moment.   I have an Inspirion 1501 with 1390 wlan card connected to a Netgear DG834N router.   I haven't seen any side effects or issues, but this is not a general release patch so there are no guarentees that it will work on all systems.
