Network connection problems
I am a college student and recently the network setup for my university's dorms changed so that computers running Windows XP SP1 were not allowed on to the network; everyone had to switch to SP2. I downloaded and upgraded to SP2, but since then, my laptop has not been properly connecting to the network. At first I thought it was the network's fault, but now it looks like something messed up the settings. Just this evening I set up the laptop on a different network, and the computer is getting a network connection but I still cannot connect to the internet (I checked network connections, and it is responding, plus the router recognizes its presence). Furthermore, I did a system restore to the evening before the connection stopped working and it still refused to work, which is extremely confusing. I can't figure out what is going on. Any help would be very appreciated.
Thanks

scm621,
Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.
You might want to try removing and then replacing the Windows XP SP2. Sometimes the software patch faulters during the installation process.

I am also having a similar problem such as this.
I am using a wireless router in my household. My friend's computer shares the wireless connection with me, and at first it was working just fine on both computers. But recently mine has not been working, though my friend's has been. It shows that I have "excellent wireless connection" so it knows I'm connected, but when I click on Internet Explorer (what I normally used to get online through my DSL) my arrow and url address at the bottom of the page just keep flashing at an extremely rapid speed, with a blank white page. I contacted Dell through the telephone earlier today and they told me some steps to help, and it worked at first but now it won't work, even when I tried repeating those steps. Any suggestions?

If it's stopped (I'm guessing it is)... try to "Start" it. If you get an "Error 5 - access denied" message... then you might want to try the following work around that I've recently used on my sister's Notebook (successfully), to access her AOL Broadband connection. This has happened to some users in the past, while upgrading from WinXP Home to WinXP Pro or after installing WinXP SP1, also (click here).
WinXP "SP2"
Start the "Registry Editor". (Click Start/ Run and type regedit).
Backup RasMan Key
Locate and then click the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RasMan
On the File menu, click Export.
In the File Name box, type "exported rasman key", and then click Save.
(You might also want to set a "Restore Point" in "System Restore", beforehand.)
In the RasMan key, locate and then right click on the ObjectName string value and modify the value to "LocalSystem".
Expand the following path:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RasMan\PPP\EAP
Delete sub-key 4, only! Do Not Delete 13, 24 & 26?
Check to see that the following is set to "Auto". (Click Start/Administrative Tools/Services)
Remote Access Connection Manager - Remote Access Auto Connection Manager - Telephony
"Reboot"
Good Luck!
Aloha,
Rod

My Remote Access Connection Manager says it's started.... so.... do you have any other suggestions since that wasn't the problem?
Thanks!

Click Start / Run...
Type cmd in the box and press Enter or click OK. The command prompt window should appear.
Type ipconfig and press Enter.
If the resulting IP Address starts with 169.254 or 169.xxx.x.x.... this usually might mean that your Winsock has been corrupted.
I'm not able to switch to my WinXP test HDD and test this out right now, so I'm not sure if this fix will work for "SP2". You might want to start with backing-up your Registry and/or setting a "restore point" with "System Restore" if you try this. The easy fix for this problem is "here".
For a more involved fix from Microsoft... "click here" and "here".
That's all that I can think of right now... I'm tired... need sleep...
Aloha.

any explanations for this? It can't possibly be a hardware problem.
