New Driver?

I am using an inspiron 1720 with a Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated controller, and a Dell Wireless 1390 WLAN mini card. Recently I started encrypting the signal (WPA2 - TKIP) and since then, have had intermittent connection problems. Though I can connect to my router - Belkin N - about every three or four times I do not have access to the internet. If I connect via ethernet - no problem. If I let Windows attempt to resolve the problem, first it tries to get a new IP address (always fails), then reset the WLAN adapter or something like that.   About once in every third time that works. If not, resetting the computer once, twice, and occasionally three times does the trick. Thus I figured to download a new driver. Windows tells me I there is no new driver needed for my WLAN card- but on the dell site, I can find one. Only problem is that when I attempt to update the driver, I opt out when a notice comes up that there is not the destination file in existence, would I like to create it.

Long winded, sorry.

Will I mess anything up if I install the Dell updated driver, creating a new destination file? Any suggestions would be great.

bbman,

I started to respond to your first post but it was removed.

Try using these Recommended Wireless Router Settings in your wireless router, I use channel 11. Some devices still do NOT work with WPA2 Security, so you'll have many issues with this type of security. I do NOT use Mac Address filtering but I have tried it and got it to work. I have used these recommended settings for 6 years and never had a problem with a wireless device conecting.

Rick posted some good information so I will not add to it.

As far as the destination folder, usually the files are in zipped form, meaning you have to extract them to use them.  So when you click on the downloaded file, it asks you to create a destination folder to put the extracted files in.  Then it will automatically create a folder, put the files in and then install the update.

However, the 1720 1390 driver is dated 12/07(for XP and VISTA) so I would guess your driver is the most current you can get.  You can check and see the date of the driver.  If you have VISTA click START(with XP right click on my computer and click properties, then HARDWARE), type DEVICE MANAGER, hit enter, then under NETWORK ADAPTERS right click on the wireless card, click properties and then driver and it will give you the drive number.  If it's 4.170.25.17 or 12 then you have the most current.

Thank you both for the information.

After reading that the default channel for the card was eleven (Thanks Rick) I did change the settings on the router to the same (so far so good).  I figure that if I don't run into any problems, I'll leave the driver as it is (It is outdated.  I have a 4.102.15.61 and that was part of being curious if I needed to upgrade).   If in the future I run into the same problems, I will definitely upgrade the driver and potentially return here.

Again, thank you both very much.

Justin,

Glad everything is working. Here is a setting I changed on mine because the computer has a power management setting that can still power down the network adapter.

Go to device manager(right click my computer, left click properties, left click hardware, left click device manager). Click on Network and then right click on your wireless adapter, left click properties, power management. Uncheck the box, allow computer to turn off this device to save power.

Please report back in a couple of days and let us know how it's working.
