Possible to network two computers w/only wire, & no hub?

I have a Dell 9100 Dimension Desktop and a Dell 1200 Inspiron Notebook. Both run XP. Both have same network adapter (Intel Pro/100 VE). I understand that to network them I need to get a second adapter for the Desktop (ICS). Is it possible to then network them with just a wire, and no hub? Thanks.

Yes, you need a 'roll-over' ethernet cable.  If you can't buy one, here's how to make one. But a router is less than $100 bucks and adds another layer of security to your Internet connection.

Standard RJ45 plug (8 pin).  Hold the plug tab down with cable towards you, pins away from you; pins count 1-8 left to right.

Pin  Color    Reversed

1 = WhOr       3
2 = OrWh       6
3 = WhGn      1
4 = BlWh
5 = WhBl
6 = GnWh       2
7 = WhBn
8 = BnWh

Ethernet uses pins 1-2 and 3-6.  Terminate one end standard and reverse the White/Orange pair with the White/Green pair on the other end.

Thanks Rem. I just found an article that tells how to do it with a "crossover cable", which is the same thing. I think I'm set now. Thanks again.
