Problem with 3c918 in optiplex gx100

I have a Optiplex GX100 that is runnng Win2003 Server, the machine also has a D-Link de220 network card in it running at 10mbps. but the on board 3c918 will not keep its connection. it connects temprorarly at 100mbps and the drop almost straght away.
 
Anyone got any ideas?
 
I have run ether eal and traced what it is doing, but to be honist it is double duch to me!!!
 
Any help would be appricated

NOT CAT 5 cables or wires that are not really pairs will fail in this way.

Forcing the driver to be 10 meg half duplex may work but the real solution is to use good cables.

Thanks for the reply,

Decreasing the speed did not help and I am using a high perfomace cat 5 cable so it is not that either 

any toher ideas?
