wireless problems

Question

i have an inspiron 600 m in my new house i can't connect to the internet wireless connection. well, in fact, the little message 'wireless connection status' shows i'm connected but when i open a browser (internet explorer or firefox) i get a sort of generic message saying it can't connect due to.. then lists 3 possible options. the main computer/router is located across the street in the neighbors house;; my sister can easily connect.. why can't i? i have firewall OFF and pretty much the same settings as when i'm in my other home where the wireless connection works fine. thank you in advance for your pity and wisdom pppt

To help troubleshoot this problem, go to Start > Run and type cmd then click OK. In the command prompt window that opens, type ipconfig /all then hit the enter key. Write down the output from this command or select it and save it to a txt file, then copy this output into a reply to this message.   Steve

I did what you said BUT i did this from the home where my wireless connection is working; Was i supposed to run this from the house where wireless is NOT working? Your probablem is that you have your TCP/IP properties set to a static IP address which is probably not in the range of other  routers. You need to set it to obtain an IP address automatically. Open Network Connections, right click your wireless connection and select Properties. Find the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), select it, then click on the properties button. Put a check mark next to 'Obtain an IP address automatically', and, if necessary, put a check mark next to 'Obtain DNS server address automatically'.   Steve

Great - that was an easy problem to solve.  You have not given anyone access to your computer.  First, your IP address assigned by your router, and is not accessible from outside your local network.  Second, telling someone your IP address is no threat, as any website can determine your IP address - if it couldn't the internet would not work as the web site would not know where to send the information to reach your computer.
