Disconnect the printer. Download and run this patch to completely remove the printer from your computer. Restart your computer.

NOw install the proper drivers. You'll be prompted when to connect your printer.

Did as you described. Still have the printer listed under Settings>Printers.

Downloaded R166998.EXE. It installed in the DELL>Drivers folder just as before. Went to Run and entered the folder path as the instructions said and the same thing happens. The folder opens in Explorer.

The patch should remove the printer and drivers.

Restart is a must do.

Now go to drivers and downloads/select product/printers/select your printer. Download drivers and firmware.

Install your printer drivers. You'll be prompted when to connect it(powered on).

Then install the firmware.

Look at the 3100cn Manual. It tells you how to instal the drivers.

You're correct that the patch should have removed the printer from the system but I rebooted and the printer is still there. I think the key is to remove it because when I plug the usb cable into the computer, there is no recognition of a new device.

Any other way to rid the computer of the old drivers/printer setup?

Options are...

Windows Installer CleanUp Utility

Before you use it, I usually ask people to make a system restore point, just in case they click on the wrong item.

Start, all programs, Dell Printer, un-install your printer

Also make sure it's removed in the control panel, add/remove programs.

Remember restarting the computer after removal.

Thanks for your help. I've got it working. Do you know where to look to see what driver the printer is using? I've looked in Control Panel>Printers, right clicked on "Dell Printer 3100cn PS" and chose Properties>Advanced but didn't see where any driver information is available.

Thanks again.
