When you say "switching into fax mode" what exactly do you mean? Do you mean the 962 is actually trying to answer the call, or is it simply changing into 'Fax' mode on the front of the 962?
I'm assuming you are using the appropriate digital line filter that was supplied with your DSL connection, correct? The line that is specified for analogue telephone purposes should be inserted into the 'line' input on the rear of the 962. That being said, we can move on.
You need to manually check your 'answer fax after' settings from the front op panel of the 962. You need to make sure this hasn't been set to 'answer fax after 1 ring'. Just out of curiosity, have you been changing any 962 settings using the Printer Setup Utility on your PC? There is a known bug that if you attempt to change the 'If fax tones are detected' setting from inside the Printer Setup Utility, it will cause your 962 to attempt to pick up on 1 ring regardless of how many you set them to from the PSU. That is why I recommend you go back through and check all of the settings from the front op panel of your 962. My fax machine has always been set to answer after one ring, when I have it in the fax mode, that is the way I prefer to have my settings. However, when setting it to pickup after five rings, I am still having the same problem of it switching from copy mode or scan mode into fax mode. I have checked all of my settings, and I also feel it is not a software issue because it operates they same way when my computer is shut down. I did go in and check the system Printer Setup Utility and after that did not fix the problem, reset it back to default. So, the answer only when fax tones are detected option is not selected. I have checked all of the settings over and over on the front panel with no changes. I would like for the fax to operate as it has been for the past three months. If I needed to receive a fax I would leave it in fax mode and after the first ring the fax would transmit. If I was not expecting any faxes I could leave it on in copy mode and still receive voice calls with no interruption from the fax machine, now all incoming calls switch to fax regardless of the mode it's in, unless I resort to turning the power off, which is what is being done most times.

First of all, the behavior you are looking for isn't how the fax is supposed to work. Your 962 is going to attempt to answer a fax regardless of what 'mode' it is set to on the front panel. Whether you are in 'Scan mode', 'Copy mode' or 'Fax mode', it is not going to change anything. The 962 is still going to listen to incoming calls and attempt to answer according to the settings you have provided. If you have been using this as your method to answer a fax in the past, I'm not sure how it was ever successful in the first place! ;) Now, you can use the 'Auto Answer' button on the front panel of the 962, and you would get the behavior you are looking for. In this scenario:
From the front op panel of the 962 select 'answer fax on 1 ring'.
- If you knew that you were going to be receiving a fax in the near future, you would enable 'Auto Answer' by pressing the button on the front panel of the 962 (light will be lit green). The 962 will pick up any incoming call on the first ring, if it's a fax, it will receive and print it. If it's a regular voice call, the caller on the other end will hear the fax tones.
- If you aren't expecting any faxes, ensure that 'Auto Answer' is off from the front panel of the 962 (light will NOT be lit green). Any incoming calls (fax or voice) will be disregarded by the 962, and will ring continuously. However, if you happen to answer and hear fax tones on the other end, you always have the option of manually sending the incoming fax to the 962 by pressing 3355# (on the telephone dialpad or the number dialpad on the 962).
I think the above listed scenario should give you the behavior you are looking for. The 'Auto Answer' button is probably the missing link in your equation, and could be the reason why you have been having sporadic fax receive results as of late. Let us know how this works out!
"do you have a distinctive ring tone enabled from your phone company so that the printer can identify if it’s a data or just an ordinary call..."
You do not need a distinctive ring service to accomplish what elevateme is trying to do here. Even so, distinctive ring does not necessarily determine whether an incoming call is data or voice. You are probably mistaking 'Distinctive Ring' with 'Call Discrimination' which is something else entirely.
