Here's how...

Turn on the printer, lift the lid and remove the ink cartridge you've just inserted (it should work whether the ink cartridge is brand new or a refill of the old cartridge).  After replacing the cartridge in the carrier rack and snapping the cartridge cover down, close the lid of the printer.

Take a look at the message which is now scrolling across the small screen on your printer.  It will continuously repeat the question "Color Cartridge?" or "Black Cartridge" depending on which you just replaced.

The default message on the lower portion of this scrolling screen is "New," so if you simply depress the button marked "select" below the three upper left "options" buttons, your machine will recognize the cartridge as a new one, and reset your ink level to full.

If you are just putting back in the old cartridge (you would probably only tell the machine you had put in an old cartridge if you had simply removed it to clean the heads or something) and want your printer to remember how much ink you still have remaining in the cartridge, press either the "-" or "+" buttons under the word "options" on the upper right area of the printer console.  This will change the word in the lower portion of the scrolling window to "old," and you can then press select to choose that option.  This works for either black or color cartridges.

Check your ink levels through the Dell software interface on your computer.  It should be set.
