CottonRLS,

Are you using these Recommended Wireless Router Settings in your wireless network, I use channel 11.

Have you updated the firmware in the router/modem?

Does the computer/printer find the connecting if you restart your computer?

Have the latest drivers for your network adapter?

What virus protection/firewalls are you using?

Try these tweaks, even with the ethernet adapter, under network.

Go to device manager(right click my computer, left click properties, left click hardware, left click device manager)

Go to the USB Controller section and click the + sign.

Go to each USB Root Hub and right click on it, left click properties, left click power management. Uncheck the box, allow computer to turn off this device to save power.

Restart your computer.

Go to device manager(right click my computer, left click properties, left click hardware, left click device manager). Click on Network and then right click on your wireless adapter, left click properties, power management. Uncheck the box, allow computer to turn off this device to save power.

Thanks for replying. I can't get to that system right now to check on power usage by the USB controller and checking for updates to my network adapter, but let me make a couple of things clear.

1) Wireless has nothing to do with this. Even though my router has wireless capability, I am not using it for this printer(or for anything, for that matter - not even broadcasting on any channel). I'm using a Linksys Powerline adapter to provide a network connection to the room where the printer sits, and it is connected via Ethernet cable to the network.

2) I don't believe USB has anything to do with it either, since there is no USB connection between the printer and any other system, only my Dell speakers connected to the Inspiron use USB.

The HP installation procedure works every time, apparently completely and utterly as it was designed to do, but should an update come down from Olympus (MS) that requires a reboot, upon restart, the printer is simply not there in the Control Panel|Printers window. I can go through the Add Printer process, find the printer and  and install the driver for it, but the full capabilities of the machine for fax and scanning are unavailable until I run HP's installation routine again. In fact, their "Solutions Center" program which accesses the full capabilities of the printer will tell me that "installation is not complete" because there is no printer installed unitl I run their installation program again.

I'm using Windows Vista's firewall and AVG security, if that makes a difference, but why that should determine this behavior by the Dell and a similar Vista configuration on my daughter's ASUS laptop(Vista w/ AVG and the same firewall settings) does not behave this way baffles me. The question remains...

What's so unique about the Dell?

Where is information about printers stored and why is the existence of this printer (and only this printer) eliminated at every reboot, every time and yet my Brother laser printer persists as printer info around it disappears?

Cotton,

It has to do with the resident shield of AVG. Try reading THIS THREAD, it should help you to try and see if the printer keeps working. I use FREE Avast Home Edition as my virus protection. The real-time shiled works very well.

Is AVG  on the other computers?

First of all, my apologies for not coming back sooner to check responses.

Secondly, at first glance, pointing the finger at AVG seems wrong since AVG is installed on every other system in my network, none of which behave this way. That doesn't mean that I'm not going to de-activate the AVG resident shield to see if that works.

I'll even download and try the Avast package you mentioned to test that out, since the printer has been dropped four times now since I updated the printer's software and firmware (ironically an update that has been available for four months and was designed to deal with networking issues).

The search continues....

Thanks for your suggestions
