Weird CD Burner issue.....

Well i have had this problem for the longest time. Even when i was on xp, regular cd-rs ( what ever brand) would ocassinaly work. Now im in vista and i cant at all now. I burn a lot of dvd's with out problem all the time, but i stick in a cd-r and the drive wont even detect the blank cd. This is a brand new cd spindle i bought recently, and the cd-rs work on my moms computer. i know its not the drive because i got a 2nd burner thats external, and i stick in a blank cd-r and Nero wont detect it either, same thing, i tried a million brands of cd-rs also! it just keeps saying to stick in a black media when i am sticking in blank cd-rs!!! Anyone got any idea what it could be?

thanks alot in advance

-Tony

My os : Vista rtm
burning software: Nero 7.5.7.0
Dell XPS 600

thanks.....

oh ya it reads cd's fine BTW....

Hi Tony,

You did not mention the name/model of the drive in question but this soulds like the classic issue we have seen with the GWA-4164B drive.
If this is your drive, try Dell`s firmware:
E113

ok so my external works now, so it seems to be my "HL-DT-ST DVD+-RV GWA4164B" thats maybe defective. So it burns dvd's but doesnt dectect cd-rs, thus cant burn cd's...... anyone else have this problem?

Look in the Dimension CD/DVD forum.  There's a couple users there with the same problem.  The solution is to replace the drive.

Ditto, call Dell and ask them to send you a replacement - but NOT the same brand and model. I had the same problem and I got a Phillips/BenQ replacement, and all my problems went away. Make sure they understand you do NOT want a replacement in kind, though, because unless you specify they may send you the same thing.
