Cannot locate target drive while restoring image from Ghost 9.0

Question

I have a Dimension 8400 and am attempting to test Ghost 9.0 restore function.  I boot the computer using their CD, and my internal HD is not visible as a target location.  The same issue occurs using Acronis imaging program, which makes me almost sure it's an issue with the Dell.   Please help!

I have an older version of Ghost that works off a floppy disk, so it may be different. However, I know there are two options, first, to restore a drive image and second, to restore a partition image. Which are you trying to do?

I'm trying to restore the complete image of my drive.

So how many drives or partitions do you have?   And where is the image file stored?   Can Ghost see the drive that the image file is stored on?   Is this image file on the same drive as where you are wanting to restore to?

Good day all. I too am having problems with Ghost 9.0 restore and Acronis. I did, supriseingly, get a reply from Norton and it follows:

Welcome back to Symantec Online Technical Support, your customer service at all times. Thank you for mailing the details.

From your message, I understand that you have three fixed local hard drives connected to your system. When you boot into Norton Ghost Recovery Environment, you are unable to access second local hard drive (Drive "D").

Thomas, please note that this issue can occur when the drive's configuration, such as jumpers and cabling, is incorrect. To resolve the problem, make sure the drives are cabled and jumpered properly.

For instance, if Windows can see the second physical drive, but DOS cannot, the second drive might be configured as a slave on a secondary IDE channel, when there is no master on the secondary IDE channel. In this case, reconfiguring the second drive as a master on the secondary IDE channel might resolve the problem. For assistance in this regard, please consult your System Vendor.

I also contacted Acronis and received this reply:

Please try the following workaround:

- Start the boot process from the bootable CD

- Press F11 key when the "Starting Acronis Loader..." message appears

- Add "acpi=off noapic" parameter to the kernel command line being shown;

- Proceed with boot

Make sure if the drives are available.

Now I have not checked these out yet, If someone checks these out and they work, please post or send me your results.

I have one fixed hard drive (C) and a removable USB 2.0 HD (I). Ghost can read the image stored on the I drive, but does not list my C drive as a target site to resore the image to.

When using the backup image browser, I can resore individual files to the C drive with no problems.

Though I am no expert, I doubt the master /slave issue applies.

I know that Dell uses Cable Select, rather than master and slave, this could also be the problem?  Justr a guess.  Seems to me that someone out there had this problem and has found the cure?
