Latitude D830 - Vista Home Basic - Ultimate

Question

I just purchased a new Latitude D830. I chose Windows Vista Home Basic because I already have a retail copy of Windows Vista Ultimate Upgrade that I wish to use on this laptop. Specification wise, I see no reason why this edition wouldn't work. However, the first thing I did upon receiving this laptop was attempt a clean installation of Ultimate. I did this by booting to the CD and not entering a product key when asked. Everything went fine, except on the first boot after installation completes, there is a BSOD that flashes for a split second and the system reboots automatically. I can't tell what the error is. This cycle repeats forever. It also crashes trying Safe Mode. I went and reinstalled the Home Basic that shipped with the laptop. That installed fine with no problems. Then, from within Windows, I ran setup from the Ultimate DVD. After installation completed, the BSOD came back and it's the same problem. How can I determine what this error is and why is this happening? I tried disabling as much hardware in the BIOS as possible in case it was driver related. Any suggestions would be great.

There is a choice on the Windows advanced screen (F8) to have the bsod stay up, then record and post the full and exact error code.

It is because of the SATA drivers. Go into the BIOS and change the disk to ATAPI mode and then it will boot.   If you want it to boot into AHCI there is a whole bunch of wrestling involved.
