soooo slow shutdown!!!

Why does it take soooo long for my system to shut down?

It dosen't do this every time.  If I have a short login in session and only use a few applications, it is pretty smooth, but if I have trouble with any application, like if an application freezes and becomes "not responding"  and I have to close it with the task manager, then it takes the system about 15 minutes to do a shutdown.  I'm not willing to wait this absurd ammount of time, so I just cut the power now and restart.

Also, sometimes cntrl/alt/delete fails to bring up the task manager when a program is seized, and this combination never succeeds in a soft boot with win xp.  What gives?

I never had this problem with windows 98.

I just bought this new system fro Dell about a month ago.  Kinda bummed about it.

I downloaded the MS anti spyware app and installed it.  It ran and reported no spyware.

My MS update is up to date.

Still slow, with apps seizing.  In fact MS anti spy siezed on the final dialogue box.

You might be having driver issues.  Post your system specs and someone can help you with that.

try running the following antispyware programs. you probably have spyware slowing down your computer and causing you all sort of problem.

Go to support.microsoft.com and search for "User Profile Hive Cleanup" (uphclean.exe).
Download and install it. It launches whenever you boot XP. When you go to shutdown, uphclean cleans up the mess XP sometimes leaves behind and that makes things go faster and smoother.

Is it always the same apps that hang? Or when you have certain combinations of things open? Do you get any error messages or blue screens? When an app hangs, open the Event Viewer (start>progams>administrative tools>event viewer) to see what error messages are reported and follow the link to Microsoft which may help you identify a cause. Possibly a corrupted or out of date driver?

You might want to run a system file check on the chance that some XP file is damaged or missing.

click start>run
type in: sfc /scannow
(space between sfc and /)
click ok

sfc will check all the XP system files for problems and may ask for your XP CD. It can take up to ~45 min to run. It won't damage your personal files or settings.

Maybe too soon to celebrate.  Most shutdowns have improved, however if I have a app become "program not responding"  and I have to use task manager to end it, I still have a very slow shutdown, like 10 - 15 minutes.

This is unfortunately happening frequently, with multiple apps.

Please advise...

Hi there! I've been having the same issues with my XPS--hanging apps, slow to shut down. I've tried a ton of possible solutions, with no luck so far. I'm interested to hear what ended up happening with you, trburwell... Did you find a fix? THANK YOU!

Hello, thanks for your response.  I actually did the same think you did.  Sadly, DELL was not that much of a help.  I am still having issues though with media center.  It acts weird sometimes so hopefully I can fix that, but at least everything else is working so far!  Thanks for your help everyone.  Again, I restored the system using the 6 restore CDs.

We ended up completely wiping our XPS. We used the feature to take it back to its factory condition. It was a pain to have to reload our documents and settings, but things are moving much faster now. We never did get any satisfactory help from Dell Support, but appreciated the comments in this forum very much.

Good luck!
