SP2 install on new Dell computer

I have a dell and love it. I have two friends that just bought Dells. Is Service
Pack 2 already on them or do we have to install it ourselves when they arrive. They have XP Home Edition coming.

It will almost surely be preinstalled . . you can right click on My COmputer . . select Properties and the box will tell you what version it is.

My Dell is new also, about 2months old, and I kept getting update pop-ups telling me to install SP2! from the time I first plugged it in an initialized it. Sounds weird that you should have to do that with a new computer, but with the help of my forum friends I did manage to work out some of the kinks! Thanks to all of you who helped me, -----

WARNING!!!! Do not install SP2.  I was networked to LAN and connected to the internet then I  installed SP2 on my brand new Dell and my network and internet connection is gone.  I have been on the telephone for the past 4 hours with tech support from Dell, Microsoft , and my cable internet provider and all 3 say that SP2 and operating system XP Home are not compatible.

Why then does my brand new Dell computer prompt me to install this "critical update" (aka SP2) if it does not work properly.  None of the tech support mentioned have been able to solve my problem.  I just paid $1600 for this computer, I have used it only 1 day and  now I have to hire a techie at $120 an hour.  Will Microsoft pay that bill? I am really mad.

Did you run the Set up a Network Wizard after the install of sp2? . . that will usually cure the problem.

My Dell is a couple years old.  I have Time Warner Cable high speed network.  I just re-formated using the Dell Home XP operating system disk.  Then I installed SP2, everything worked fine.

Networking and Dell and SP2 upgrade are compatible (at least for me).

Absolute nonsense. Quite frankly, I don't believe that Microsoft told you that "SP2 and operating system XP Home are not compatible."  They may have implied that SP2, XP Home and certain hardware and applications aren't compatible, " but I'll bet that's all they admitted to, because that's all that might be accurate.

3½  , Hope like heck there isn't anything wrong with your hard drive, because if there is, that may very well be the end of that worthless Restore partition they're forcing on customers, instead of a real operating system CD.

4 , press f11 continueassly untill the restore page appears

4½  , If 3½ winds up being the case, good luck getting your operating system back on with no CD, and thank you for choosing Dell.  You might try calling them "continueassly" until they send you one.

5½  , Maybe.

7 , if that fails to do the trick you can always revert back to using the windows xp disk, and all the other disks that are supplied i.e the motherboard disc, the soundcard disc, the graphics card disc, and if you want to the software that come with the machine all on discs.

6, the partision isnt kept on your hard drive, as i was told by a dell engineer when i rang them . Its on a separate chip thats attached to your motherboard  so you can change your hard drive or format the existing one if needed without effecting the restore operation. the only draw back is if your motherboard get corrupt or blow up ????.
