Do you have Norton Internet Security installed? If so then you need to uncheck protect my Symantec product.......go to NIS tab> Settings>Configure>miscellaneous(left hand side) uncheck protect Symantec........Then do your system restore, afterward go back and check the box for protection.

Thanks for the answer.
No, I do not have Norton Internet Security but I do have Norton Anti Virus. I did disable that but that did not improve anything. I think my system restore is somehow corrupted and does not accept or recognize the checkpoints as restorable dates. I am just hoping that one of these days a system update fixes the problem, as I cannot find anyway to isolate the System Restore program and reinstall just that feature of Windows XP.
Meanwhile I fixed the non working mediaplayer by upgrading to mediaplayer version 11 and that solved the problem of the corrupted version 10, which was automatically deleted.
