I recently purchased an oem full copy of win XP which I intent to install on a laptop that has win2000 installed. I also have a Dell Dimension 4400 with valid oem version of WinXP installed. The O/S of the Dimension 4400 has become corrupted and when I attempted to do a re-install from the oem copy that came with the dimension the indication was that my disc was outdated and should not be used to replace current version on my computer ie SP1/SP2 etc.I have valid keys for both versions so I was wondering if it was legal to update my Dimension with the new version of XP (SP2) that I intend to install on the laptop.. jmar
You got the message due to NOT booting to the XP CD, which is the proper method.
Two questions. 1) Is it legal? 2) Will it work?
2) You don't say it's a Dell OEM version. If it's not, your key will not work.
1) Is it legal? Read the EULA and decide for yourself. This forum isn't for legal advice.

You should be able to use the OEM version on the 4400 . . when you are asked for the COA, use the one on the side of the case.
