Connectivity Key Terms
-
Mobile broadband allows you to connect laptops and tablets to the web anywhere you can get a mobile signal. Connect to a 3G, 4G, or 5G network through an embedded module and a physical or virtual SIM card.
-
5G networks provide more speed, 10x less latency and significantly more capacity than 4G/ LTE. Choosing a 5G-enabled device will allow you to fall back to 4G and even 3G when 5G is not available.
-
Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) is a physical card with a chip that allows a mobile carrier to match your device with your account so that you can communicate over their network.
Embedded SIM (eSIM) also referred to as a virtual SIM, is a programmable SIM card that is embedded directly into the device, that plays the same role as a physical SIM. -
4G/ 5G and Wi-Fi are complementary technologies that provide mobile connectivity. Wi-Fi is used mainly in buildings and densely populated areas due to its shorter range, while 4G/5G offers broader coverage and a nationwide network available even in remote areas. Mobile Broadband has been proven to be more secure by design and offers a better protection against external attacks.
-
Embedded modules are integrated into the laptop, optimizing power consumption, antenna positioning for better reception and instant connectivity.
A mobile phone used as modem for tethering requires manually connecting to a laptop, and configuring a connection which is shared with the laptop. This uses more phone battery and means the user must have access to their smartphone or a cable. -
Mobile broadband modules are categorized by technology and performance. 4G LTE is the current mainstream technology and it is available in two versions: Cat 9 (standard speeds) and Cat 16 (faster speeds), the latter offering up to 1Gbit/s of performance.
5G is the new standard that will take over in the coming years with a tremendous increase in bandwidth and even lower latency. 5G modems are also backwards compatible with 4G and other protocols so the switch to the newer generation will be seamless. -
CAT 9: Standard 4G module providing performance levels to 500 Mbps. Offers good performance for video calls and web browsing.
CAT 16: High end, high performance 4G module providing performance levels up to 1 Gbps. Allows for faster download speeds and additional bandwidth required for multiple simultaneous connections.
