In this video, we'll demonstrate how to install Windows 10 on VMware Workstation. Additionally, we will see how to disable automatic Windows updates. For the installation, we're using VMware Workstation 15.5.1 Pro.
Before you begin, ensure that you have created a virtual machine in VMware Workstation. For more information, see the "Creating a virtual machine in VMware Workstation Pro" video.
First, let's see how to install Windows 10 on the virtual machine. To begin, open VMware Workstation Pro. Select the virtual machine from the left pane and click "Power on this virtual machine" from the right pane.
Press any key on your keyboard to boot from CD or DVD. Next, enter your language and other preferences, and click "Next". Then click "Install now".
If the "Activate Windows" page is displayed, and if you want to use the Windows Mac volume license, then enter a product key. But if you want to use the OEM version of Windows click "I don't have a product key".
Select the operating system you want to install, and click "Next". Read and accept the license and click "Next". Then, select the "Custom: Install Windows only" option.
Select the "Unallocated Space" and click "New". If required, change the size and then click "Apply". Four new partitions are created. Select the primary partition and click "Next".
After installation, the virtual machine is rebooted. Next, select the region and keyboard layout. Click "I don't have internet", and then click "Continue with limited setup".
Enter the username and click "Next". Enter the password and other preferences for the PC, and then click "Next". The Windows 10 operating system is now installed on your virtual machine.
Finally, let's see how to disable Windows updates. Disabling Windows updates helps avoid any sysprep errors that may occur while capturing a dynamic image using Dell ImageAssist.
To disable Windows updates, search for and open "Computer Management". Click "Services and Applications", and then double-click "Services". From the list, click "Windows Update", and then right-click "Properties".
In the "Properties" window, from the "Startup type" list, select "Disabled" and click "Stop" to stop the service. After disabling Windows updates, you can now enable the network adapter from the virtual machine to allow local network and internet connectivity.
Also, depending on your preferences, Windows updates can be enabled before capturing the golden image. This completes the process of installing Windows 10 on your virtual machine, and disabling Windows updates.
After the virtual machine is set up on VMware Workstation Pro, you can download and start working with ImageAssist. For instructions on how to download ImageAssist, capture an image, restore an image, or create a bootable USB drive, see the videos available at the Dell ImageAssist YouTube playlist.
