PowerProtect: Transparent Snapshot Data Mover VM Backups Fails to Create LWD Snapshot

Summary: Transparent Snapshot Data Mover (TSDM) backups failing after vCenter or ESXi is upgraded to version 8.0.2 but the other host remains on 8.0.1.

Symptoms

Transparent Snapshot Data Mover (TSDM) VM backup fails with either of the errors below:
  • Observed when ESXi is upgraded to 8.0.2 but vCenter is on 8.0.1.
ERROR ONE:
The vCenter task failed: A specified parameter was not correct: sync id (500)

vCenter task 'task-72158' failed: VimFault: 'dp.vpx.fault.SnapshotInProgress.summary': DPD Snapshot in progress, TSDM snapshot UUID = '45kri245-34fb-4j58-adf6-e01f27dc3ggg' (500)”

Cause

PowerProtect Data Manager engineering conducted interoperability tests regarding TSDM in VMware versions 8.0.1 <-> 8.0.2. Here are the results:
  • ESXi 8.0.1 <-> Center 8.0.1 works fine
  • ESXi 8.0.2 <-> Center 8.0.1 fails with the error "The vCenter task for 'SDM Snapshot Sync Full' completed with state 'error'. The vCenter task failed: A specified parameter was not correct: sync Id (500)"
  • ESXi 8.0.2 <-> Center 8.0.2 works fine
  • ESXi 8.0.1 <-> Center 8.0.2 fails with error "vCenter task 'task-72158' failed: VimFault: 'dp.vpx.fault.SnapshotInProgress.summary': DPD Snapshot in progress, TSDM snapshot UUID = '45e3b245-34fb-4d30-adf6-e01f27dc3aaa' (500)"

Resolution

As vCenter and ESXi upgrades and versions are outside the bounds of PowerProtect Data Manager, it is up to the customer how to proceed.
  • Upgrade so both vCenter and ESXi are on version 8.0.2
Or
  • Downgrade so both vCenter and ESXi are on version 8.0.1
PowerProtect Data Manager does not support version 8.0.2 as of October 2023. For the latest interoperability information, check the E-Lab Navigator support matrix.

Additional Information

The same issue found with ESXi v8.0.3 and vCenter v8.0.2
Resolved after upgrading vCenter to v8.0.3 to match the ESXi version.
