PowerPath for AIX: While Installing Oracle Automatic Storage Management (ASM), the "Create ASM Disk Group" screen does not show any available disk

Summary: Following a new installation of Oracle ASM 11 g (or above) or an upgrade of Oracle ASM, no disks are showing up as available ASM disks.

Symptoms

No disks are showing up as available in "Create asm Disk Group" although the hdisk (if MPIO is used) or the hdiskpower (if PowerPath is used) are "available."

screen shot of No disks are showing up as available in "Create asm Disk Group" UI

Cause

To ensure successful database, client, and grid infrastructure installation, IOCP (I/O completion Port) must be set to "Available". By default, iocp is set to "Defined" (can be checked in an emcgrab in "lsdev -C" output)

# lsdev | grep iocp

iocp0 Defined I/O Completion Ports

The above sample output shows that the IOCP status is set to Defined and hence not enabled: No device shows up.

Resolution

To ensure a successful database, client, and grid infrastructure installation, IOCP must be set to "Available" using this procedure.

  1. Log in as root and run the following command:
    # smitty iocp

  2. Select Change/Show Characteristics of I/O Completion Ports.
  3. Change configured state at system restart from Defined to Available.
  4. Run the lsdev command to confirm the IOCP status is now set to Available:
    $ lsdev | grep iocp
    iocp0      Available       I/O Completion Ports

Restart the system to make the changes permanent. (reboot)

Additional Information

Configuring I/O completion ports (IOCPs) on AIX servers is not required to install DB2 for Linux, UNIX, and Windows software. However, this configuration step is recommended for performance purposes. You must perform these steps on each host you want to participate in the DB2 instance. AIX 5.3 TL9 SP2 and AIX 6.1 TL2 have the I/O completion ports (IOCP) file set included as part of the base installation.

However, if the minimum operating system requirements were applied using an operating system upgrade rather than using a new operating system installation, you must configure I/O completion ports (IOCP) separately.
