Symptoms

Video brightness changes after a restart or reboot with Dell PremierColor installed on the XPS 9350 and 9550.

Cause

No cause information is available.

Resolution

Dell PremierColor

During setup, Dell PremierColor creates a startup registration point in Windows 10 in order to automatically start when any user boots the system. The program has a feature that controls the LCD brightness, thus overriding the LCD brightness settings of Windows upon restart, reboot, and wake.

With Dell PremierColor, the LCD brightness settings are reverted to "default" when the system is restarted, reboot or when the system wakes from sleep or hibernate. This behavior seems to affect the XPS 9350 and 9550 systems with Windows 10.

Solution

You can try these three solutions to correct this behavior.

  1. Manually adjust the brightness level in the Dell PremierColor program and save. Restart the system to see if the adjustment took effect.
  2. Disable the Dell PremierColor program from Startup. Press ALT+CTRL+DEL and select Task Manager -> Startup Tab -> Right click Dell Premier Color Program -> Select Disable. Set the wanted LCD brightness and restart the system.
  3. Uninstall the Dell PremierColor program if you do not use the Dell PremierColor program. Restart the system.
