Summary: vProtect: Unable to discover some VMs if OpenStack has more than 1000 VMs.

This article applies to This article does not apply to This article is not tied to any specific product. Not all product versions are identified in this article.

Symptoms

During a vProtect inventory synchronization, it is unable to discover some of the VMs.

Running the following OpenStack command to list VMs on the OpenStack side, also fails to show them.
openstack server list --all
If we add a parameter as shown below, the missing VMs are listed.
openstack server list --all --limt -1

Cause

By default, OpenStack has limits on the responses sent by the nova API to 1000 entries per response.

Resolution

Solution 1:
Upgrade vProtect to 19.13.0.520 or later. This release has an enhancement that enables it to discover all the VMs.

Solution 2:
Increase the limit value on OpenStack. Engage OpenStack Support for assistance.

This is achieved by editing the nova.conf file which is located in the /etc/nova/nova.conf.
Add the following line to the [DEFAULT] section.

Example (increasing the limit to 5000):
Editing the nova.conf file

After modifying the file, restart the nova services.
