Symptoms

When testing the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) connectivity to an Avamar grid with the snmpwalk utility, it fails as follows:

Resolution

1. Start the SNMP subagent from the UI:

    • Management Console Server (MCS) Java UI:
      • Log in to the Avamar Administrator Console
      • Browse to Administration
      • Services Administration tab
      • Right-click snmp subagent, and select 'Start snmp subagent'
    • Avamar Web User Interface (AUI):
      • Log in to the Avamar AUI
      • Browse to Server
      • Services
      • Under Additional Services, Locate SNMP DAEMON
      • Click the 3-dots (kebab menu) and select Start

2. Retry the snmpwalk command.

For example:

snmpwalk labavamar.company.com -v2c -cpublic .1.3.6.1.4.1.15597

The expected output from a successful snmpwalk command:

Additional Information

SNMP and snmpwalk:

Support for snmpwalk was introduced in Avamar 5.0 SP1 and is an SNMP application that uses SNMP GETNEXT requests to query a network entity for a tree of information.

The snmpwalk utility can be useful when troubleshooting SNMP issues or testing functionality after changing the configuration file /etc/snmp/snmpd.conf.

Issuing an snmpwalk query tests functionality by making a connection to the host using the public community string.
