Instructions
To obtain the serial number from an ECS node on Gen 1 and Gen 2, the server chassis and node layout must be understood.
To identify a node, first identify the server chassis, which holds four nodes. The serial number tag is located between the nodes within the front middle section of the server chassis as follows:
To obtain the server chassis serial number, run the following command over CLI on any node within the chassis. If this is an eight node VDC the server chassis serial number will be the same for the first four nodes (1-4). The remaining four nodes (5-8) will have a different server chassis number:
Run the following command to obtain the node serial number for the concerning node. The node serial numbers are different for each node:
# sudo dmidecode | grep -A4 'System Information'
System Information
Manufacturer: EMC
Product Name: S2600JF
Version: FFF
Serial Number: FC1234567890
Once the server chassis serial number is obtained, the node serial number, located under the 1 GbE port on the back bottom left section of each node, can be identified as follows:
# viprexec -i "sudo dmidecode | grep -A3 -e 'Server' -A3 -e 'Mount' | grep -A3 'Chassis'"

The server chassis and node serial numbers may be combined to locate the correct node within a data center for identification or activity purposes.
