Dell XC: 16G - Add node or cluster create operation failure

Summary: Cluster creation or expansion of an existing cluster fails if the minimum software versions are not met.

This article applies to This article does not apply to This article is not tied to any specific product. Not all product versions are identified in this article.

Symptoms

Scenario 1:
The existing cluster is running AHV 6.5.2.7, and the host being added is a wave1, such as XC760-24.
Before the node expansion, when the system is checked, we can see all the drives are available in CVM with AOS version 6.7.1.

When an add-node operation is performed, the hypervisor is laid down, but the CVM is not created.

Scenario 2:
The existing cluster has AOS 6.5.x, but the add-node operation fails. When we look at the console, we can see that the MDRAID has not been configured correctly, so the CVM first boot has not been completed.

Console MDRAID not configured

Cause

Scenario 1:
As the cluster is running a version older than the minimum qualified which was AOS 6.5.3, the expand node failed.

Scenario 2:
The nodes with Kioxia (KPM6WRUG7T68) or SK Hynix (HFS1T9G32FEH-BA1) drives that do not initiate properly with the mptsas driver version less than v40.

Resolution

Scenario 1:
Update the cluster to a minimum of AOS 6.5.3 (recommended to always use the latest AOS).

Scenario 2:
Update to a minimum of AOS 6.7.1.
