Dell Computers Cannot Boot to a USB 3.0 Optical Disk Drive

Symptoms

Affected Platforms:

  • XPS 13 9345
  • Inspiron 14 Plus 7441

Cause

USB 3.0 ODDs are not supported in UEFI on the current platforms.

Resolution

The computer is working as designed.

Workaround:

  • Connect any USB 3.0 ODD using one of the below:
    • USB 2.0 plug adapter
    • USB 2.0 Hub
  • Use a USB 2.0 ODD, like a DELL DW316
