Symptoms
Identical NetBIOS and DNS hostnames on multiple computers on a network displays the following symptoms and lead to degraded performance:
- NetBIOS conflicts
- DNS issues
- Unexpected behaviors such as:
- Network communication errors
- Resource access problems
- Low virtual memory warnings

Cause
These networks are designed for each computer to have a unique hostname for both the NetBIOS and DNS within the same network.
Resolution
The following Microsoft guide explains their requirements when setting up a computer name:
Instructions on renaming the computer name:

Click Rename on the system settings page.
