Instructions
Install Oracle JDK 17 or NRE 17.0.x. NRE is available through Dell Support NetWorker Driver Downloads.
Additional Resources:
- The "Dell NetWorker Runtime Environment Readme Guide" for NRE 17.x releases: Support for NetWorker | Manuals & Documents

- The "Install and configure
Openwebstartto launch NMC" Section of the 19.13 NetWorker Administration Guide.
Before Proceeding:
There are a few things to note when upgrading from NetWorker 19.12.0.x to 19.13.x and NRE 17.x
- You cannot install both NRE 8.0.x and 17.0.x on the same system. When you upgrade NRE from 8.0.x to 17.0.x, it removes 8.0.x from the system. Meaning, if the environment contains both 19.12 (or prior) and 19.13.x NetWorker servers, it will only be possible to access the 19.13.x servers after upgrading NRE.
- NRE 17.x uses JDK 17.x instead of JRE 8.x. There are differences in how the NMC is accessed. NRE 17.x provides OpenWebStart which facilitates the "Runtime Environment" used to launch the NMC.
- Unlike NRE 8.0.x, there is no "NMC Launcher" shortcut.
Initial NRE 17 Configuration:
- After installing NRE 17.0.x, launch
openwebstartfrom the NRE installation path
- Complete the
openwebstartinstallation. Optionally, install for the current user only or all users of the system. This depends on if the host is accessed by a single user or multiple users. Leave all other options default. - After installing
openwebstart, launch theitw-settings.exefromC:\Program Files\OpenWebStart - From the
openwebstartconsole, go to JVM Manager - From JVM Manager, click Add Local
- Browse to the NRE java installation. For example:
- Click Open.
- NRE now appears in the JVM Manager window:
- From JVM Manager, click Settings.
- Under, Update Strategy, select Do not download any version:
- Click Ok.
- From JVM Manager, click Apply, then click Ok.
- Go to
C:\Users\USER_NAME\.config\icedtea-weband opendeployment.propertieswith a text editor. Add the following line:
#Netx deployment configuration #Mon Jul 07 13:19:48 EDT 2025 ows.jvm.manager.vendor.allowFromJnlp=true ows.install4j.propertyUpdate=1749662489457 ows.jvm.manager.updateStrategy=NO_REMOTE deployment.jvm.arguments.whitelist=-Djava.locale.providers
- Save and close the file.
- Go to
C:\Program Files\OpenWebStartand openjavaws.vmoptionswith a text editor. Add the following lines:
-XX:+IgnoreUnrecognizedVMOptions --add-modules=java.se.ee -Xms256m -Xmx2048m
- Save and close the file.
- Open a web-browser and go to
https://NMC-SERVER-ADDRESS:9000 - The browser may report a warning when using the default NMC server's self-signed certificate. Accept the warning and proceed.
- Click Launch Console:
- This downloads the NMC server's
gconsole.jnlpfile. - Copy the
gconsole.jnlpfile to a location of your choosing (for example:C:\Users\Public\Desktop) Use this to launch the NMC. The shortcut can be renamed as per your discretion.
Note: NOTE: NRE 17.x does not provide an "NMC Launcher" like NRE 8.x. The above shortcut replaces this. If you have multiple NMC servers, you can create an individual shortcut per NMC server by accessing the NMC's
https://NMC-SERVER-ADDRESS:9000 page and downloading its gconsole.jnlp file.
Accessing the NMC:
- Launch the NMC using the new
gconsole.jnlpshortcut created after completing the above steps. - Click Yes in the
openwebstartconsole to trust the NMC server certificate. - Click Run at the Security Approval Prompt:
- Log in to the NMC:
Additional Information
If NRE is not configured correctly you may observe the following:
The NMC Launcher returns the following error after the NMC server was upgraded to 19.13:
OR:

Similar issues may appear if the NMC client has both NRE and Oracle Java Runtime Environment installed.
