Dell is bekend met de beveiligingslekken met betrekking tot zijkanaalanalyses, bekend onder de namen Meltdown en Spectre, die gevolgen hebben voor veel moderne microprocessoren en die op 3 januari 2018 door een team van beveiligingsonderzoekers in de openbaarheid werden gebracht. Tot op heden zijn er geen "echte" exploits van deze kwetsbaarheden gemeld, hoewel onderzoekers proof-of-concepts hebben geproduceerd.
Richtlijnen voor patches
Update 11-10-2019:
Drie essentiële onderdelen moeten worden toegepast op de hierboven genoemde beveiligingslekken:
- Pas de update van de processormicrocode via de BIOS-update vermeld in onderstaand onderdeel Getroffen Dell producten toe.
- Pas de patch voor het toepasselijke besturingssysteem toe. Zie onderstaand onderdeel Richtlijnen voor besturingssysteempatches.
- Gebruik het NVIDIA driverpakket in het gedeelte Dell producten voor zakelijke klanten met NVIDIA GPU hieronder voor de betreffende systemen. Voor platforms met GeForce Experience (GFE) software bevat het driverpakket ook de beschermde versie van GFE.
De patches voor het besturingssysteem bieden bescherming tegen Spectre (variant 1) en Meltdown (variant 3). De NVIDIA driverupdate biedt bescherming tegen Spectre (variant 1). De update van de microcode is alleen vereist voor Spectre (variant 2), CVE-2017-5715.
Zodra meer informatie beschikbaar is, werkt Dell dit artikel bij met informatie over de betreffende producten en stappen voor herstel.
Dell raadt klanten aan om de best practices voor beveiliging tegen malware te volgen en zichzelf in het algemeen tegen mogelijk misbruik van deze beveiligingslekken te beschermen. Hieronder vallen de onmiddellijke implementatie van software-updates, het vermijden van onbekende hyperlinks en websites, het niet downloaden van bestanden of applicaties van onbekende bronnen en het volgen van protocollen voor wachtwoordbeveiliging. Klanten dienen tevens beveiligingssoftware te gebruiken ter bescherming tegen malware (geavanceerde software tegen bedreigingen of antivirussoftware).
Opmerkingen:
- De lijst met getroffen platformen voor Dell producten voor zakelijke klanten zal worden bijgewerkt zodra er informatie beschikbaar is.

Getroffen Dell producten: Dell systemen voor consumenten en zakelijke klanten
Het gaat om de onderstaande systemen. Hiervoor zal gepatchte firmware beschikbaar zijn via de Dell BIOS-release (BIOS-update). De geschatte datums in deze lijst zijn voor de planningsdoeleinden van klanten en worden bijgewerkt met koppelingen naar downloadpakketten zodra die beschikbaar zijn.
Opmerkingen:
- Voordat u de BIOS-release installeert, moet u zorgen dat u de nieuwste Windows-updates hebt geïnstalleerd.
- De vermelde datums zijn geschatte datums van beschikbaarheid en zijn onderhevig aan veranderingen zonder voorafgaande kennisgeving.
- De onderstaande data zijn aangegeven in de Nederlandse datumnotatie: DD-MM-JJJJ
- Deze patches kunnen ook de firmwarecomponent van het Intel ME/TXE-advies (INTEL-SA-00086) bevatten.
- De onderstaande tabel bevat een koppeling naar de productpagina voor uw Dell computer met de laatste BIOS die beschikbaar is; volg de instructies van de procedure.
U moet het volgende doen:
- Ga naar de Dell Support website.
- U krijgt drie opties om uw computer te identificeren.
Hetzij:
- Tik of klik op de vermelding van uw computer onder DEZE PC.
Opmerking: Als er onder DEZE PC geen vermelding voor uw computer bestaat, kunt u op de knop SupportAssist downloaden en installeren tikken of klikken. Hiermee kan uw computer automatisch worden geïdentificeerd. Volg de aanwijzingen om SupportAssist te downloaden en te installeren.
- Voer de servicetag, Dell EMC product-id of het model in en tik dan op de knop Zoeken en selecteer uw computer in de lijst.
- Tik of klik op Alle producten bekijken: U moet het type apparaat, de merknaam en vervolgens het productmodel selecteren.

- Tik of klik op de vermelding van uw computer onder DEZE PC.
- Tik of klik op het tabblad Drivers en downloads.
- Selecteer BIOS in het vervolgkeuzemenu onder Category:.
- Tik of klik op Downloaden rechts van het nieuwste BIOS dat voor uw computer wordt vermeld en volg de aanwijzingen.

Opmerking:
- ThinOS-versies 8.4 en hoger worden niet beïnvloed.
ThinOS is ontworpen als een 'gesloten' besturingssysteem, wat betekent dat alleen door Dell geleverde software op ThinOS kan worden uitgevoerd. ThinOS bevat geen webbrowser of andere interface om software te zoeken, downloaden of installeren. In versie 8.4 heeft ThinOS authenticatie van software-updates of -pakketten via digitale ondertekening geïntroduceerd. Hierdoor kunnen gebruikers (inclusief beheerders) geen andere software downloaden of installeren op ThinOS, waaronder malware waarmee misbruik kan worden gemaakt van beveiligingslekken in de onderliggende CPU. Klanten dienen hun apparaten bij te werken met de nieuwste versie van ThinOS. Dell houdt de situatie in de gaten.

U moet het volgende doen:
- Ga naar de Dell Support website.
- U krijgt drie opties om uw computer te identificeren.
Hetzij:
- Tik of klik op de vermelding van uw computer onder DEZE PC.
Opmerking: Als er onder DEZE PC geen vermelding voor uw computer bestaat, kunt u op de knop SupportAssist downloaden en installeren tikken of klikken. Hiermee kan uw computer automatisch worden geïdentificeerd. Volg de aanwijzingen om SupportAssist te downloaden en te installeren.
- Voer de servicetag, Dell EMC product-id of het model in en tik dan op de knop Zoeken en selecteer uw computer in de lijst.
- Tik of klik op Alle producten bekijken: U moet het type apparaat, de merknaam en vervolgens het productmodel selecteren.
Opmerking: Zie voor meer informatie het Dell Knowledge Base-artikel Het modelnummer van uw Dell computer vinden of de onderstaande video.
- Tik of klik op de vermelding van uw computer onder DEZE PC.
- Selecteer met behulp van het vervolgkeuzemenu onder Besturingssysteem het besturingssysteem dat overeenkomt met wat is geïnstalleerd op uw computer.
- Via de vervolgkeuzelijst onder Categorie selecteert u Video.
- Tik of klik op Downloaden aan de rechterkant van de laatste videodriver of grafische driver die voor de computer is vermeld en volg de aanwijzingen op het scherm.
