Symptoms

While adding the devices to the storage pool, few of the devices are getting added, while others are failing with.

# scli --add_sds_device --sds_name SDS12 --device_path /dev/sdl --device_name /dev/sdl --storage_pool_name SIOHDDSP02 Error: MDM failed command. Status: Adding a device takes too long. This might indicate a problematic device

In MDM event and trace logs we would see the following events

Cause

The error might be caused due latency issue.
Latency issue could be on network or device.

Resolution

1. To rule out network latency, perform an "SDS network test." See ScaleIO User Guide and search for "Testing the network"  Check for packet drop using ping command between MDM and SDSs.

scli --start_sds_network_test --parallel_messages 16 --sds_name <>
scli --query_sds_network_test_results --sds_name <>
scli --query_network_latency_meters --sds_name <>

2. To rule out the device issue, perform a dd read operation against the device. Check for any errors logged in /var/log/messages.

dd if=/dev/sdX of=/dev/null bs=1024 (replace /dev/sdX with the device name)
