AppSync: SQL Transaction Log Backups are not expired if an older Full/Copy Database backup exists

This article applies to This article does not apply to This article is not tied to any specific product. Not all product versions are identified in this article.

Symptoms

The user had configured AppSync to make transaction log backups immediately after every SQL database backup.
The user later noticed that the log backups were not being expired from the Backup Path on the SQL server.

The AppSync User and Admin Guide states that log backups are eligible for expiration when the following conditions occur:
  • The log backup is older than the service plan Minimum Retention Hours setting.
  • All older database backups are expired.
The user checked and verified that there were no older database backups under Copy Management > SQL Server.

Cause

There were older copies of the database present under Service Plans > Microsoft SQL server.

Resolution

The AppSync server logs show the log backup that is being targeted for expiration, and the related SQL Database backup that is connected to it.
The logs show that there is a Full Copy of the database present from 7th September. As a result, any newer log backups cannot be expired.

The user navigated to Service Plans > SQL Server and expired the older copies from there.
Regardless of where copies are listed from, ensure the "copies" drop down filter on the page is set to ALL to ensure older copies are listed.
