Symptoms

You may receive a message from "Controlled Folder Access" that a Dell software tool (example: SSDUpdate.exe) has been blocked and the Dell software installation will not complete successfully.

Cause

Using the Controlled Folder Access feature of Windows Defender, this might include the temporary folder as a controlled folder to prevent malicious software writing into this folder.

Adding this folder blocks some firmware and driver updates from Dell.

Resolution

Controlled Folder Access Exception

You can add exceptions for Dell software so it is not blocked by "Controlled Folder Access." This can be done manually in the Controlled Folder Access Page of "Windows Settings" and even be deployed as a Group Policy Object.
