Removing the heat-sink assembly

Prerequisites

  1. Follow the procedure in Before working inside your computer.
  2. Remove the base cover.
  3. Remove the battery.
  4. Remove the wireless card.
  5. Remove the solid-state drive from M.2 slot one.
  6. Follow the procedure from step 1 to step 4 in Removing the hard drive, if applicable.
  7. Remove the solid-state drive from M.2 slot three, if applicable.
  8. Remove the solid-state drive from M.2 slot four, if applicable.
  9. Remove the solid-state drive interposer board, if applicable.
  10. Remove the rear-I/O cover.
  11. Remove the computer base.

Steps

  1. Disconnect the fan cables from the system board.
  2. Remove the two screws (M2.5x5) that secure the heat-sink assembly to the palm-rest assembly.
  3. In the reverse sequential order (8>7>6>5>4>3>2>1), loosen the eight captive screws that secure the heat-sink assembly to the system board and palm-rest assembly.
  4. Lift the heat-sink assembly off the system board.
