How to replace the Processor on a PowerEdge XE9680

This 3D experience gives you the step by step process of replacing the Processor and a PowerEdge XE9680. The procedure will also include removing the Power Supply Units, System Cover, Cooling Fan Cage Assembly, Cooling Shroud, PSU Cage, Heatsink and reinstalling them.

Removal

Power Supply Units

System Cover

1. Identify the system cover highlighted in blue.
2. Using a 1/4" Flathead or a Phillips #2 screwdriver, rotate the lock counter clockwise.
3. Lift the latch untill the system cover slides back.
4. Hold the cover on both sides, and lift the cover away from the system.

Cooling Fan Cage Assembly

1. Identify the cooling fan cage assembly highlighted in blue
2. Lift the blue release levers to unlock the cooling fan cage assembly from the system
3. Hold the release levers, and lift the cooling fan cage assembly from the system.

Cooling Shroud

PSU Cage

1. Identify the PSU cage highlighted in blue
2. Disconnect the cables from the connectors on the power distribution board.
3. Disconnect the cables from the connectors on the power distribution board.
4. Using both hands slowly rotate and pull up the PSU cage handle.
5. Hold the handle with one hand and the rear of the PSU cage to lift away from the system

Heatsink

Processor

1. Position the processor and heatsink module(PHM) as shown in the AR
2. Identify the processor highlighted in blue.
3. Using your thumb, lift the thermal interface material (TIM) break lever to release the processor from the TIM and retaining clip.
4. Holding the processor by the edges, lift the processor away from the retaining clip.
5. Using your thumb and index finger, first hold the retaining clip release tab at the pin 1 connector, pull out the tip of the retaining clip release tab, and then lift the retaining clip partially from the heat sink.
6. Repeat the procedure at the remaining three corners of the retaining clip.
7. After all the corners are released from the heat sink, lift the retaining clip from the pin 1 corner of the heat sink.

Install

Processor

1. Identify the processor tray location highlighted in blue
2. Align the retaining clip with processor tray and ensure the pin 1 indicator on the processor tray is aligned with the pin 1 indicator on the retaining clip.
3. Place the retaining clip on top of the processor in the processor tray.
4. Align the processor with retaining clip, by using your fingers press the retaining clip on all the four sides until it clicks into place.
5. Use the thermal grease syringe included with your kit to apply the grease in a thin spiral on the bottom of the heat sink or For new heat sink, remove the Thermal Interface Material (TIM) protective film from the base of heat sink.
6. Place the heat sink on the processor and press the base of the heat sink until the retaining clip locks onto the heat sink at all the four corners.

Heatsink

PSU Cage

1. Identify the PSU cage location highlighted in blue
2. Using both hands slowly rotate and pull up the PSU cage handle.
3. Hold the handle with one hand and the rear side of PSU cage, align and insert the PSU cage with the help of guiding slots at both sides of the chassis.
4. Rotate the handle down to lock position.
5. Connect the cables to the connectors on the power distribution board.
6. Connect the cables to the connectors on the power distribution board.

Cooling Shroud

Cooling Fan Cage Assembly

1. Identify the cooling fan cage assembly location highlighted in blue
2. Holding the blue release lever of the cooling fan cage, align the guide rails on the cooling fan cage assembly with the standoffs on the system.
3. Lower the cooling fan cage assembly into the system until the cooling fan cage connectors engage with the connectors on the system board.
4. Lower the blue release lever and press to lock the cooling fan cage assembly into the system.

System Cover

1. Identify the system cover location highlighted in blue.
2. Align the tabs on the system cover with the guide slots on the system.
3. Push the system cover latch down.
4. Using a 1/4" Flathead or a Phillips #2 screwdriver, rotate the lock clockwise.
