Aurora R13, auto restart when playing WOW
Hi all,
Can somebody there help me to identify what the issue is here? It's very disappointing that whenever I play World of Warcraft (WOW) with this brand new Alienware PC, Windows 11 get auto restarted sometimes after a few minutes and sometimes after 1 hour or less.
I have tried everything without touching the hardware, including the following:
1. Run the post-boot diagnosis (F12 -> Diagnosis). It shows no error with any of the hardware.
2. Run the online System Diagnosis on Dell website. It shows no error with the hardware.
3. I used to apply "High Performance" Power option plan in Windows 11. Windows restarted in a few minutes after running WOW. I changed the "Minimum Processor State" to 5% in the power plan. Windows restarted after 1 hour of gameplay. But when I continue to run WOW, Windows will restart by itself after a few minutes.
4. Disable the "Automatically Restart" feature in Advanced System Properties -> Startup Recovery settings. After playing WOW for a few minutes, it goes to a blank screen but the system does not restart.
5. In Windows Event viewer under System log, Event 41 was generated every time it restarted unexpectedly. The event does not tell any specific reason that causes the restart. But the source of the event indicates it's from "Kernel-Power", which means it might be caused by power issue. The issue might be related to any components such as PSU, CPU, display card, motherboard, etc.
6. Updated BIOS to the latest version 1.0.2. Still the same issue.
7. Install the latest display driver from Nvidia official website. My display card is GeForce 3080. Apply all Windows Update. Same issue occurred.
8. Reset Windows back to the factory default state, by running Support OS Recovery tool. I have tried this several times already, and only install WOW after Windows has been setup. Update the latest display driver and Windows Update.
What should I do next? Contact Dell Technical Support and they will replace the hardware one by one to isolate the issue? This is very time consuming. Any clue?
Best Regards,
Henry Chang

Having this same problem on brand new R13 with the 3090 GPU. Within an hour of being turned on , random re start with black screen first on the display, then it re boots. Tech support tried many different fixes including re installing back to factory. Still does it. A tech is supposed to install a new motherboard sometime next week as they think that is the problem. Also after the install back to factory, the alienware command center no longer loads, and now all RGB lighting except the Geforce logo on the card no longer turns on. The system can go for an hour or so so sometimes on minecraft, but then a black screen and re boot. Even does it just at the log in screen sometime right after tuning on. Very strange and disappointing on a brand new top of the line system.. Was a birthday present for my kid and it is such a bummer!

your onsite tech should be able to fix that so no worries. Add a note to your visit and let them know about that just in case you have an issue with the lighting controller in addition to the mobo. I didn’t even get to game. I noticed the pattern just trying to open YouTube or even the command center. I do have a feeling there was a bad batch of mobos that came out of the factory and now on-site techs will be busy rebuilding pcs for the next few weeks.

I am personally thinking the power supply is on the edge. 750 Watts for an RTX 3090 and the latest generation CPU is in my opinion a tad low.
I would feel better with 850 Watts. But that is just me.
Please keep the community updated with any new information you might find out during the repair process, so others can be assisted better should they encounter issues.

Glad to see I am not the only one fighting this issue. I am having the same problem of forced restarts at random. So far I have seen no correlation between work load and the forced restarts. They have happened after just browsing the web for a few hours or less than an hour after while playing a game.
Having just gotten this PC a few days ago, I just talked with Dell Tech Support for the first time today. I have done the same things you have (all software diagnostic tools pass, both pre-boot, post boot, and stress tests). All Dell Tech Support did for me was re-install a few drivers, ran the stress test that passed, and said keep playing with it.
On my event viewer whenever I have the forced restart I see a bugcheck error with event ID 1001 which is slightly different from what you are seeing. Maybe it's two different problems? When I had the MS Support community help me identify what the event viewer is seeing they said it's a graphics card/Nvidia related error that is being thrown. See this thread: MS Support Forum Thread
My BIOS was already version 1.0.2 when I got the PC.
I had the latest Nvidia drivers when I was having the issues, Dell Tech Support rolled me back to 471.41 but I am still having the issues.
My only other clue is that one time today I started seeing visual artifacts during my gaming and web browsing, but I have not seen that issue since. I have kept an eye on all system temps and have never seen above 75C on either graphics card or cpu, so I am struggling to see it's a cooling problem.
My only next step I know now is to keep bugging Dell Tech Support with all all the data I have until they help me try and isolate the problem. I suspect the graphics card or mobo is bad and throwing random errors, but I have no clue at this point.
My PC Specs:
Aurora R13
12th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i9-12900KF
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080
64GB Memory
2TB SSD
Windows 11 Home v21H2
No overclocks turned on.

75C on the GPU is pretty hot. Should be around 55C. I have to push mine to get it to 55C.
I would increase the fan profiles to provide more airflow, see if that does anything.
Heat can do odd things, like random crashes. If I am not mistaken the DDR5 memory has no heat spreaders, they might need more airflow.
I would almost run a complete cycle of memtest86 to see if anything pops up.

Same problem. R13, 3090, 64gb RAM, 2TB SSD. Received just 4 days ago and problems started on day 1.
Random black screen reboots (BSOD). Logs all point to NV graphics problems. Happens under light or heavy load every few hours.
Support spent about 5 hours working on it and has decided to replace it since it arrived with this problem. Fingers crossed that the replacement can ship quickly and not have the same problems.

So just out of curiousity has everyone who posted here with the same random reboot problem have an on-site tech call for a motherboard replacement? If so it sounds like they have at least isolated the problem. Also curious if everyone had their Alienware shipped initially from Mexico. I have a tech coming tomorrow so I’ll keep the forum updated as soon as it’s installed/tested.

Add me to the list as well. Started having seemingly random black screen reboots straight out of the box. It can do it after a fresh boot and browsing the internet for a minute or after 3 straight hours of playing Doom Eternal at max graphics settings.
I've done most of the troubleshooting that others have done with no luck. Am going to call Dell Support tomorrow to get that ball rolling.

Add me to the list of new R13's with this problem. I get the black screen, 15-20s hang, and then the system reboots at random. I can be browsing the web, coding, or gaming and the system just does it at random.
As others have mentioned, all the Dell hardware tests pass, updated drivers do not matter, and stresst tests with 3D-Mark do not trip the problem. Every crash has been bug check 0x00000116 with dxgkrnl.sys as the faulting driver.
I have gone as far as collecting timeseries data on the system and GPU with a Preomtheus setup, but no patterns have emerged yet.
PC Specs:
Aurora R13
12th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-12700KF
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080
32GB Memory
512GB SSD PM9A1 (Default with system purchase)

You need to RE install directx 9,10,11 via the control panel add features legacy directx as well as the DirectX June 2010 drivers.
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8109
download the file and make a folder for it then run and have it extract to that folder. Once done run DXSETUP.EXE in the folder as administrator.
You should also download and install Visual C++ X86 2010
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=26999
vcredist_x86.exe
And then download and install the Tropics Benchmark.
https://benchmark.unigine.com/tropics
It should run without error for DX9 and DX11 and OpenGL.
This works for windows 7,8,10, and 11.

I was also looking into DirectX issues, but since it happens sometimes even at the login screen, I had quit troubleshooting since they are sending me a new one. However, It looks like I won't be receiving the new one for several weeks, so I am proceeding to try your recommendations now. I will report back and let you know my findings.

I have followed your instructions to see if it helps. All benchmarks completed without error: DX9, DX10, DX11 and OpenGL. I'll report back as to whether or not I've had further black screen reboots.
Thus far, only one of my crashes happened while playing a game. All of the others were while using Firefox (with hardware acceleration disabled) or while installing a program. I've had about 20 of these crashes since receiving the computer on December 1st.
Fingers crossed.

I am running WOW with Quadro RTX 4000 Turing based card just fine with windows 10 and 11. This also works fine with my GTX 3060 12Gig card.
Windows 7,8,10,11 do not have the visual C++ X86 2010, Directx June 2010, Dot NET 2.0 3.5 SP1 installed by default. They must be re installed to support older games that rely on data calls to directx 9,10,11 as well as Visual C++ 2010. If you download tropics and it will not run thats your first clue that you will have problems with older steam games, WOW, CSS, Fallout 3, Fallout 4, Fallout 76, etc that rely on the older API OpenGL Directx11 instead of Vulcan and Directx 12.
These are Known errors so if you download steam and install the free versions of CSS, etc you will see that they reinstall the recommended API before running the game. The tropics benchmark from 2008 is perfect for testing this because it will not run if the api files are missing. You can also max it out and run it as a burn in test to see if the gpu is overheating or PSU is failing etc. This bug check indicates that the graphics card driver has attempted to reset the graphics card, but failed to do so within the allocated time interval, and therefore caused a timeout with the following Stop Code 0x116 Video Locked up.

Speedstep, thank you sharing your expertise in this thread, and I am sure it will help someone here, but the problem extends beyond older game titles as it can happen under normal productivity conditions such as browsing the web, using office ect... which would not be related to DirectX, DriectPlay or Microsoft C++ Redistributable versions. It seems more likely that Nvidia/DirectX are the victim vs. the cause of the crashing.
As a test today I have disabled the system from sleeping in the power profiles under the Alienware Control Center (ACC), as I suspect the crashing happens randomly after resuming from a sleep state.
