i9-7900 OC2 fun with cooling
I have the stock cooler with my i9. I can run it at OC1 for days. If I push to OC2 It crashes hard after 4-8 hours. Tomshardware has discussed this at length last year. Do "We" have a better cooling solution that will keep the chip running? Dell or otherwise?
Thank you

Stupid question but I presume it's liquid cooling ?

I am using the stock liquid cooler. I have read here that the cooler radiator is pretty thin. So if I replace the cooler might it just be worth it to also replace the CPU with an i9-9900 at the same time?

1. Good. However, I think that is pretty hard on your nice Intel-i9 .
2. Sounds normal to me.

I think heavy OC is slowly damaging it.
After years of abuse ... at years 3-4 it might have a hard time being 100% stable at even stock-clocks.
I also think nice Intel-i9 (with all those core and threads running) is plenty fast at stock-clocks. It was designed by Intel to run at it's intended stock-clock, and provide long life.

While I would tend to agree with you, the wonderful 2 year premium service makes it a fun thing to do.

above, typical 27mm budget cooler, NVDDX or K31VH
below, Threadripper 48mm TFGHM or HR6V4; Asetek 48mm & 49mm coolers like Corsair H80i V2 / GT, Thermaltake Water 3.0 Pro, Antec 920 etc are the largest you can use. I believe the Alien cooler is $215 (US), 80i is $75 (after reb8)

The thicker cooler looks like a plan but the screw placement for the CPU looks off. Is it possible to pull the hoses safely and still use the Intel CPU mount?

You're correct that the socket TR4 retention ring isn't compatible with your Intel & would need to be removed & replaced with your current retention ring (or buying one from Asetek) ... having never disassembled the Gen5 pump housing (however I have removed the ring from an Aurora R7 type) it seems you'd remove a few screws from underneath, pop the cap, twist the retention ring off & perform reassembly; how hard or easy I can't say, but I can say that the factory got the ring on there in such a way it should come off without much fuss, simply because the Aliens aren't the only ones to use that Gen5 design, it's seen in retail models like Arctic Liquid Freezer 120 (discontinued)(AMD/Intel rings included) where the assembly manual could show how to get rings on & off; the cap is only held from underneath by 4 screws ... ... ...
