2013 list of compatible video cards for alienware x51

Hey everyone. I am thinking about upgrading the videocard in my x51 but wary on which cards would be compatible. The x51 has restraints when it comes to size, power supply usage, and the way the videocard vents heat. About a year ago I made a bad decision of trying to upgrade the videocard with a card that dumped heat into the case (normal for large case computers) which ultimately caused my x51 to blue screen.

Currently I have the stock gtx 555 card in my x51.

I have not been following the latest releases of GPU cores and was wondering if anyone could list approved video cards which are compatible with the x51.

I have the i7 quad core @ 3.4 ghz

Money is not an issue and will be willing to pay top dollar for the best video card that works with the x51.

Any help is much appreciated and sorry if this is a repeat thread!

Hello Dngray!

The upgrade possibilities will be a GT640, GTX645 or a GT660

If you decide to go with GTX670 make sure it is a stock reference model and not an FTW, superclock, or overclocked version. Many folks have had good success using stock GTX670 on X51.

Note however the R1 version of X51 was designed to support a GTX660 at maximum.

I am also curious what the reason we can't put a gt670 into the first gen x51 w/330w if they sell it on the website now with it? Please advise...

So does that mean I would not be able to go with a GTX660 ti?

Also do you know what brands and card dimensions will fit inside the R1 alienware x51

Does anyone know of any brands of video cards (MSI, EVGA, ASUS, etc..) will fit in the R1 alienware x51. I am looking for a card with the GTX660 GPU.

Also could a GTX660 ti work for the r1 x51?

What happen is that the processor of the X51R1 will have more power consumption that the processor of the X51R2 that is why it will be able to handle the GTX670 video cards without any problem, the GTX660 doesn't need  as much as power than the GTX670.

X51 R1 power boards are different than X51 R2 power boards.  And the internal power board does the conversion from AC to DC to power everything in the system.  But again some folks have upgraded to GTX670 on R1 by themselves with success so YMMV on R1.

I am concerned that if i purchase a GTX670, the card will either not fit in the case or the card was engineered to dump heat back into the case instead of out of the case which will overheat the CPU. I made that mistake already and don't want to do it again. I am also concerned that the GTX670 will draw too heavily on my 330 watt PSU. Do you know of any success stories you could link me too of R1 X51 owners upgrading to the GTX670 or GTX 660?

What brands would be best?

Irishlad147 on Youtube successfully upgraded to a GTX670... and it was EVGA's FTW edition.

This is one of his vids where he discusses the upgrade...
