Alienware 17 R3, 15 R2, 13 R2 Not Turning On Problem (The Reason + FIX)

Alot of people including me have been having the same exact problem where their Alienware laptop wont turn on after you shut it down for no reason at all. Now, people DO NOT panic! There is nothing wrong with your hardware. The laptop is perfectly fine. What is causing this issue is the BIOS they released (1.2.12, 1.2.13, 1.2.14) these BIOS cause this problem ive never had an issues before on the latest 2015 bios that was installed on the Alienware when I purchased it until I updated the bios mentioned above. Alienware I please ask you to not release a bios that would cause issues to people and please do intensive tests before you release anything. The sticky they have on the forum here did fix the issue though, but it may come back.

this will solve your problem, in this link it says to install BIOS 1.2.13 or higher, BUT DO NOT DO THAT, and instead when the computer turns on after following the directions for the fix mentioned in the link below, download BIOS 1.2.8 and install it, then after having 1.2.8 you wont have the problem anymore.

My alienware r3 17 doesn't turn on anymore, nothing happened at all. All of a sudden won't power on. Only the led light around the power button when AC is connected, but goes off when touched when the AC is off too.

I tried this and it doesn't work. used a flat screw and a plier touching the CLRP1's 2 little yellow squares.

This is the second time i have this error, the first time i sent it to Dell USA to change the motherboard. The second time, Im stuck with a unusable laptop in Ecuador (where i live) and hoped for this to work. this forum points its a common error due to the BIOS update.

What can i do?

-----

i tried also disconnecting the battery to power only with AC. nothing.

No Rams, nothing.

Every usb and stuff disconnected, nothing.

power draining... nothing.

touching the CLRP1, nothing.

-----

my service tag points to driver BIOS update 1.2.14.... why does it exist out of my tag a 1.2.8 version? Why does it happen? i can't just send flying my laptop from Ecuador to USA, and then wait again to get it fixed everytime it happens....

i tried this, and it doesn't work. my computer is off. It's the second time it happens in less than 2 weeks. the first time i sent it to dell, replaced motherboard, and came back alive. and now it's dead again. Both times i had the bios updated to 12.14 from dell site suggest drived for my service tag.

Why is this happening? how can i fix this if my laptop is not powering up? i tried the CLRP1 touching both pins, i understand this is like resitting the CMOS battery but nothing happens. my laptop is dead.

I'm in Ecuador, sending to DELL in USA is not an easy task, and for being the second time this is too frustrating.

Try doing the battery drain first and then do the CLRP method make sure you are touching both pins at the same time.

Received a brand new Alienware 17 two days ago. This morning it won't switch on. I see your all suggesting installing Bios or booting but I'm totally confused as to how to do that if the computer won't even switch on...????

I have 13r2...had to to the CLRP trick and roll back the bios but still having intermittent start up problems.  BIOS 1.2.8 does not exist for 13r2.  Come on Alienware, get your act together!

Wow this may have been a bad idea purchasing the AW-17 R3. Mine is still enroute and due to be delivered in July 12. I hate to go through this. What can someone recommend once i get my laptop and how to update the suggested Bios - 1.2.8 at initial start up on the laptop. Thanks in advance ..

I cannot imagine how much money Dell has wasted on hardware repairs and replacements based on faulty bios upgrades.  Diagnostics could not detect that the issues were the result of bios problems.

Dell just took down bios 1.2.12 - 1.2.13 - 1.2.14 from their drivers site, the only bios I can see available there is bios 1.2.8

you may have an older bios than 1.2.8, if you do then you may want to keep that. its a great bios. I think its called bios 1.2.2 or 1.2.3

I bought alienware few weeks ago .

I'am having problems with left speaker , time not synchronizing after PC shutdown and recently a new bigger problem is out .

My PC does not start using power button when it is completely shutdown .  When I connect the power cord to the PC , it  starts and in windows the baterry is shown to be fully charged so battery dead is not the issue.

So the problem I'am facing is , when I shutdown alienware on battery it does not start again unless I put the charger back in.

I searched Dell Forums

en.community.dell.com/.../19982644

and  the problem they are describing is with the bios .,

So I changed my bios from 1.2.15 to back to 1.2.8 and still no change . There is another solution , where the user suggests to remove ram and use screw to reset the pc . This creates beep sound and solves problem .

I have not tried this as I'am not aware what things will it restore  and I'am afraid to open my PC up.

I'am already under talks with alienware tech guys but , still waiting to hear from them.

Would love to hear your solution to this.

Best Regards
