CPU Pump power needs

Hello all

I have recently recovered an Alienware branded liquid CPU cooler assembly from an Aurora R4 and I would like to fit it into a generic PC system. I have noticed the plug for the pump specifically is standard so I thought I would just cut and join onto a more standard plug.

Could anybody help me understand the wiring for the current plug? Does the picture help to explain?

Thank you.

You only use wires #1 #2 #3 (#4 jumper isn't used in your retrofit project, cut it off if need be). I labeled the wire assignments for you, do not get them mixed up.

- pump is pre-wired exactly like other pumps; differs only in connector-type & use of jumper. these "3-wire" cooler pumps replicate the wiring scheme (left-to-right) of a basic fan on pins 1/2/3 -

Project needs new fan pins & connector I assume, for instance below, available online or eBay etc:

Black = ground = pin1, red = 12v = pin2, rpm can vary (wht ylw etc) = pin3. A cooler pump's wired exactly like a basic 12volt fan so that the cpu_fan header can power either a basic heatsink's fan or a cooler pump, either type (air or water) can safely be used off a mthrbrd fan header, obvious right?

if you get new fan pins, strip your cooler pump wires & crimp the fan pins onto your wires using mini-needle nose pliers or a crimping tool, follow up with a qwik dollop of solder (if u have a solder iron + solder). If no solder iron, crimp fan pins as tight as you can & pop them into the correct slots til they clik & won't back out. Note that the 'barb' on top of the fan pin slides into the connector & 'locks' into the small grooves, shown:

this is the primary way to retrofit an Alien Kooler into a non-Alien kase. Make sure you label your ground wire somehow so u do not confuse what your black wires are after you snip the 7pin end off; once you've marked the ground wire, you will automatically know the central wire is 12v a & the outer wire is rpm. From there, pop the wires/pins into their correct fan connector slots & your project will go off without a hitch. Post further concerns or qwestions if you've any.

Hi,

I recommend you could also try posting this on the Notebook Review and Alienware Arena forums for assistance.

I should've mentioned that I make an adaptor for Alien koolers $10, send me a PM or friend reqwest for details. Use of an adaptor means you do not have to lose the factory 7pin end, do not have to mod an end onto it yourself, & possibly retain the resale value of your cooler knowing it has its 7pin attached; below are adaptors I've made for the Area-51/Aurora kooler using correct parts:
