GPU replacement for 2012 m17x R4

Hi

So theres a tonne of posts about GPU upgrades for the m17x R4 but seeing as the machine is so old now i dont know what cards are still manufactured that will be compatible also being in Australia i dont know if that effects whats available or even if this is the correct place for this post.

Currently the system runs on the i7-3610QM CPU @ 2.30GHz with the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 675M, however the graphics card appears to need replacing as theres something wrong with it that forces the system to bluescreen or just completely shut down and it only does this when the graphics card is enabled.

So my question is, what graphics cards can this be replaced with?

Thanks.

Before i suggest upgrades, can you report the temperatures of your laptop and the GPU in particular? I'm wondering if the laptop itself is getting too hot (happens if you do not do periodic maintenance).

As for upgrades, the Alienware-tested upgrades are as follows.

  • GTX 680m
  • HD 7970m

The community-tested upgrades are as follows.

  • GTX 700m series, GTX 870m, GTX 880m, and GTX 965m to GTX 980m.
  • HD 8970m / R9 m290x (same GPU, different name)
