Mx11 keyboard issues

Just got my Mx11 and went to play portal which comes with the laptop.  When i launch the game and start playing, i can't do anything except move sideways.  I try to reassign the buttons and all the letter keys show up as being numbers keys.  I've checked under the control panel to make sure there's only one keyboard driver installed and it is U.S.  The keyboard works fine in other programs, it just seems to have a problem in the games.  Does any one out ther have any suggestions.
