RAM Upgrade on Alienware x51-R1

I have the first edition Alienware x51 that came out with the gt 545 and gtx 550 or something close to those graphics cards.

My specs are:

CPU: I3 - 2120  3.3Ghz  (2 cores)

Memory(RAM): 6gb     [Don't know speed]

GPU: Zotac gtx 670 2gb Vram

Hard Drive: Internal: 1tb 7200rpm      External: 1tb Usb 3.0

PSU(Power Supply): 330 watts

I know my CPU and GPU are highly not matched properly but I am upgrading the CPU soon.

I want to upgrade my RAM, I don't know the highest I can get with the R1 so I would like some help I would to know the highest amount

of Gigabytes I can get with it and Fastest speed also. Thanks

Hello Serpa,

Alienware X51 has 2x 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM Slots which support Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM up to 1333MHz.

  • Alienware X51 supports upto 8GB system memory with a SandyBridge Processor.
  • Alienware X51 supports upto 16GB (8GB X 2 modules) system memory with a IvyBridge Processor.

Since you have SandyBridge Processor, your Alienware X51 would support upto 8GB memory.

Hope this helps!

Hello again, I had the latest BIOS version installed and the Memory brand was Kingston 2 x 8GB 1600MHz, I also tried it with Samsung and had no problems.

The Sandy Bridge X51 will take 16GB 1600MHz, it's just that Dell never issued that model with that amount of RAM and therefor all's you'll get from Dell reps is the old text book response "That model is not supported, rarara!!!"

I have installed 16GB 1600MHz in Sandy Bridge X51's many times with no problem, the models I upgraded were i7's, not sure if a i3 is capable of 16GB RAM fullstop, but I just checked the intel Ark website and intel says it is, here's a link.

Hi Andrewsi, do you remember which Bios version you had on the Sandy Bridge X51 system when you installed the 16GB 1600 Mhz RAM. Also, do you remember which model RAM you installed ?

Thanks

Your machine only has two slot, therefor you will have to remove the 2 x 4GB and replace it with 2 x 8GB 1600MHz, here is a link to an ebay seller, you may find it cheaper somewhere else but this will give you an idea of what your looking for.
