having issues upgrading video card.

I got an Alienware Aurora back in 2011, It has a AMD 6990 I'm trying to upgrade to a R9 290x which has even lower power requirements. But I just get a black screen when I turn on the PC.  I read dell puts limits on the Bios, I hope that is not causing my issue because this will be the first and last alienware I ever get. I paid $4,000 for this PC back in 2011.

It can be done - But it's not easy, something to do with the VBIOS from memory, here's a thread to start you off.

This is from a conversation I had a while ago

one that I am aware of has experienced issues with it, including CrossFire not working correctly. I believe what he ended up doing to get the GPUs to function correctly was use an 8970M vBIOS instead of the stock R9 M290X vBIOS. I believe there is a thread in the M18x sub-forum at Notebook Review Forums on this

I really don't understand why dell would put a restriction like that on a gaming PC. I'll probably just end up taking it to the geeksquad and see if they can get it installed. This will probably be my last alienware, the premium I paid for the brand really is not worth it, when you can't even upgrade.
