Aurora R6 should xmp be set in BIOS?

Hello,

I have a new Aurora R6 with 32 GB of HyperX DDR4.  The R6 supposedly came from the factory with overclocking on the CPU set to 4.4 GHz, however, recently I received a message on the screen stating my OC levels have been reset.

I set it back to OC LV 1 in the BIOS but should XMP be set to XMP1/2 or disabled? I believe I read somewhere that the memory has a profile built-in. Not sure if I need to set the XMP or not in the BIOS.

Thanks in advance!

I re-opened my support case and while I waited I read a few more threads here. In one they mention setting XMP to XMP2. I gave that a shot and sure enough, my BIOS now shows the 32 GB at 2667 Mhz.

I don't know why for the YouTube guy it worked on XMP1 but for mine, it's XMP2. The only other difference I can see from the video, besides my BIOS being 1.0.3 is that he has 4 sticks of HyperX and mine came from Dell with 2 16 GB sticks. Hope this helps others out.

I think I found the answer on my own via YouTube. A guy has an R6 like mine and is adding the HyperX. He also had the OC LV 1 set like me and then changed the XMP to XMP1. You can then see on the main BIOS page that Memory Speed is 2667 Mhz. My BIOS is still showing the 2400 Mhz speed, the only difference I can see between his and mine is my BIOS is 1.03 and his is 1.0.1

I think I'm going to open a case with support on this.

Aronith,

My Bios is 1.0.1 and I only get 2667 Mhz to show when I select XMP2 for my 1 stick of 16. What slots are your 2 sticks of 16GB in?

No, it came with 1.0.1 I believe. I opened a support case and they remotely did the BIOS update on it.

I'm curious to know if this will change anything for you, as yours already acts the same as mine while still being on 1.0.1.

I don't know why the guy in the YouTube video has his set on XMP1 and it still shows 2667.  Maybe with 4 sticks of 8 you only need XMP1, who knows.

Thanks Aronith. I did not know a bios update came out a few weeks ago. I'll update to 1.0.3. Did your R6 come with 1.0.3?

I guess the good news is that you do see the RAM speed at 2667, regardless of your BIOS revision, so at least you know you are getting what you paid for.

I too was with support and they screwed around with things for 2 hours because could not see 2667.  I better make sure If I'm still on 1.0.1. before I talk any further. I'll let you know when I get a chance.

Aronith,

My Bios was still 1.0.1. I flashed it to 1.0.3. No change in anything I can tell. CPU set at OC LV 1. Memory only runs at 2667MHz when I select XMP2 profile, otherwise for XMP1 and disabled it runs at 2400MHz. I would like to know what XMP1 is for or does. I'm going back and forth with a dell mod on another thread.

How are you guys setting the XMP to 1 or 2?

My XMP was disabled by default. I've changed overclocking to LV1 and LV2 but XMP still disabled.

My R6 came with 16 (1x16gb) 2666.I bought another 16 (2x8gb)2666 from Newegg. However, the Dell part dropped to 2400 (slot 3). The Newegg parts (slot 1&2) are running at 2666.

*Also I found out from Kingston support, the Dell memory parts that came with our systems are Dell parts. They were bought from Kingston but are now Dell and not supported by Kingston. Verified by the part number.

Set memory overclock right below where you set cpu overclock.

Your mixing memory. The memory that came in your system is made by kingston for dell only available by dell and is 2400 by default and can be over clocked to 2666 or maximum allowed by your bios which in the R6 is 2666.. That memory is in the white slot and can be overclocked to 2666 using xmp2 profile. If you bought another 2 sticks of 2666 from Kingston( they offer 2133, 2400 and 2666 in hyperx fury)and put in black slots and set memory to xmp2 profile I guess all 3 would run at 2666.

chaos400ra3,

Thanks from responding. But that's my problem. XMP is greyed out. OC'ing LV1 or 2 makes no difference. So I have them in the opposite slots. The 16gb dell stick is in Slot3 (black). The Kingston HyperX 2x8 16gb 2666 are in 1&2 white. i'll trying switching the order now.

I tried every combination while keeping the pair together (odd/odd or even/even) and I still can't turn on XMP. Currently slots 1&3 are 8&8. the 16gb stick is in slot 2.

In pics I've seen online of new Aurora R5-R6 machines that came directly from Dell with 2 perfectly matching DIMMs pre-installed (for proper dual-channel operation) ... they are installed in the two slots with white securing-clips. This points to this pair of white-clip slots being the Primary Memory Bank.

I doubt any XMP profile will engage or OC possible unless RAM system is properly configured. All installed DIMMs in matching pairs in each Bank (for Dual Channel Mode). Fill Primary Bank First, Fill Secondary Bank Second (if available). Finally XMP or 2667mhz only works if ALL installed DIMMs are capable of that.

the only difference between the parts is the 1module vs 2modues to get to 16gb. all of the  hyperx's DIMMS's are rated at 26666. your saying XMP won't engage unless I was to replace the 1x16 with another pair of 2x8? or another identical Dell 1x16?
